So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Some folks say that smoking herb is a crime,
If they catch you smokin' they're bound to drop the dime
Insufferable informa crazy fools
Wait with their fingers crossed for you to break the rules
And in the evening, we try to jam,
We like the music loud in this here band
We let the bass line drop as loud as we can stand
Somebody always gotta turn informa for the man
I wanna know know right now, is there one of you in the crowd,
Are you gonna call 911?
And spoil all of my fun
You crazy fool
I'm in the mood
Get ready
I'm in the mood
Come on now, yeah
I'm in the mood
Are you ready?
I'm in the mood
Come on now, yeah
Come on
Load up the bong, crank up the song
Let the informa' call 911
Load up the bong, crank up the song
Let the informa call 911
And when security police force want to arrive
Don't try to run, don't try to hide
Just pull out the .9, pop in the clip, and let one slip
Into these crazy fools
I'm in the mood
Get ready
I'm in the mood
Come on now, yeah
I'm in the mood
Are you ready?
I'm in the mood
Come on now, yeah
And in the evening, when we try to jam
We like the music loud in this here band
Oh, I wanna know now, I want to know, know right now
Are you willing, are you willin' and able?
Oh, got the crazy fool
Some folks say that smoking herb is a crime
If they catch you smokin' they're bound to drop the dime
Insufferable informa' crazy fools
Wait with their fingers crossed for you to break the rules
But, I'm in the mood
Get ready
I'm in the mood
Come on now, yeah
I'm in the mood
Are you ready?
I'm in the mood
Come on now, yeah
I'm in the mood

I'm in the mood
Come on now
Uh!

its amazing how far music can come.. 24 years after it released and its one of the most heartfelt songs ive heard

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.
Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Holiday

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
This is my smoking song.
Why do these crazy "vigilantes" do that? If toking wasn't a CRIME, then I'm sure they wouldn't complain to anyone. Just because it is illegal because it is, the everday ignoramus will do everything he/she can to be a fascist follower.
The song is really straightforward, like most of Sublime's lyrics. And that's a good thing for once.
nickjp u just dont get the sublime vibe dude, pure positivity no dissin around anyways, this has to be hands down the best smokin' song along with 311's who's got the herb..
I love this song, when you hear it you can easily tell that Sublime isnt one of those stupid stoners, you can tell that they know how to control their high, and its saying fuck the people who think of weed as something bad, when Brad says "you crazy fools" I love that part, cause he is speaking truth, there is absoulety nothing wrong with smoking the reefer
probly best song to blaze and booze too, just chillin with some good friends tellin stories and what not. best lines "load up the bong, crank up the song, let the informer call 911" so ballsy
Man i have loved this song since i was 4 haha of course at the time i didn't actually know what it was about and now i do know it's even better but yea the feel good quality of it is awesome
I can't stop listening to it! I've been playing it over and over, today. :)
Gotta love Bradley for writing this song, good 4:20 song. I use to smoke... along with other substances and weed really keeps you peaceful. It is the least harmful thing out there, the only crime it was guilty of for me was making me depressed cuz i smoked all day everyday without stop for a long time. I use to say weed was good for everything: smoke to wake up -smoke to go to sleep, smoke to feel happy -smoke to calm down, smoke to get high- smoke to get stoned. I mean anything in moderation is fine, I just can't smoke once in a while. Once I start smoking I can't stop cuz it's all natural and who doesn't like getting high? Quitting after many years, I would never condemn anyone for smoking weed, its a beautiful thing. My pops use to say god made all medicines for a reason, and weed definitely has its place. I still smell people's weed, you can't beat the smell of well grown mary jane :D. and I still bump Sublime all the time, they're one of those bands where all their songs are killer- new and old.
yep, this is my smokin song too. I love it. Its badass. SUBLIME IS BADASS!
This song is about... smokin some ganja and I guess, people who rat you out to the police? Such a joyful song musically though. I love the "and in the evening...." pre-chorus part.
load up the bong crank up the song let the informer call 9-1-1
got caught smoking in the park once. that sucked.
