Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
This song is about a small town like Kurt's where people buy, trade, and sell stuff. Kind of like a flea market. It is also about two people who are in love with each other, but won't admit it to one another.
This song is so cool. Its cool because out of all the things at this swap meet that theyre willing to sell theyre not willing to sell things that really mean something to them...like ciggarettes and photographs. i love this song.
This was also used in the bands humorous, first biography for Geffen Records. Kurt and Chris were said to have met at "The Grays Harbor Institute of Northwest Crafts." Chris is described as having a passion for "gluing seashells and driftwood on burlap" and said " I liked what Kurt was doing. I asked him what his thoughts were on a macaroni mobile I was working on. He suggested I glue glitter on it. That really made it!"

i think this is song is about two people in love... a rich posh girl and a poor guy whos into smoking and that. 1) Kurdt Kobain loved mispellings as is seen through his jounals and his misspelling of "Heroine" 2) Kurt worked very hard for his music to become popular, and be so called "cool." It was the elitist punk attitude you so nicely are demonstrating that preventing him from admiting this, adding to his spiral of contradictions. If you read anything he's written you can see the internal conflict he harbors of being accepted, becoming famous AND staying true to his punk roots.
So please, leave the poor chatspeak kid alone.

Just a small comment about a couple of the lines. "Keeps his cigarettes close to his heart". I always took this to have a dual meaning. Firstly, that he literally keeps his cigarettes close to his heart (in the front pocket of his shirt or jacket). But also in contrast to "she" mentioned in the next line, "he" (typical male who can't even directly express real emotions) doesn't care much about sentimental things like photos. Simple and sort of silly, but one of my favorite Nirvana songs and one of my all time favorites.
