All The Girls Love Alice Lyrics

Raised to be a lady by the golden rule
Alice was the spawn of a public school
With a double barrel name in the back of her brain
And a simple case of Mummy-doesn't-love-me blues

Reality it seems was just a dream
She couldn't get it on with the boys on the scene
But what do you expect from a chick who's just sixteen
And hey, hey, hey, you know what I mean

All the young girls love Alice
Tender young Alice they say
Come over and see me
Come over and please me
Alice it's my turn today

All the young girls love Alice
Tender young Alice they say
If I give you my number
Will you promise to call me
Wait till my husband's away

Poor little darling with a chip out of her heart
It's like acting in a movie when you got the wrong part
Getting your kicks in another girl's bed
And it was only last Tuesday they found you in the subway dead

And who could you call your friends down in Soho
One or two middle-aged dykes in a Go-Go
And what do you expect from a sixteen year old yo-yo
And hey, hey, hey, oh don't you know

i cannot believe no one has commented on this song, i heard it when i was a little girl but never really picked up on the words...its about a young girl who is all mixed up, she just couldnt get with any boys so i guess she's having sex with other girls, hence all the girls love alice, gettin you kicks in another girls bed, two middle aged dykes in a Go-Go, i guess in the end she ends up dead, at only 16. its actually a really good song but sometimes listening to it upsets me, i feel bad for alice and i wonder if she is somone elton met when he was struggling with coming to terms with his sexuality.

@Cherriepie Bernie Taupin wrote most of Elton's stuff, so it may not have anything to do with anything Elton remembers.

Actually according to the liner notes on one of Elton's best of albums the song was initially written as a tribute to Alice Cooper but got re-written to reflect a prostitute or lesbian.

hmm . . . sounds like a suicide to me . . . when your mixed up and you have no friends that would take your calls except "One or two middle-aged dykes in a Go-Go" dunnooo?

Definitely about a young lesbian who sleeps with middle aged married women. I don't think she is a prostitute. Finding a Lesbian in Soho can't be that hard.

But it's one of my favorite Elton John songs.

Finding an openly lesbian woman ANYWHERE prior to about 1982 was pretty much impossible. Let me put it this way, only 100 years before this song was written, Queen Victoria refused to believe lesbians even existed.

I mean, of course they've existed as long as humanity has. But while gay men started achieving small measures of acceptance in the 1970s, lesbians had a few more years to wait.

well, to say that its about a 16 year old prostitute is to say the sun is hot. it's taupin's attempt of being on the inside and trying to connect with elton john's battles with his sexuality. it has more to do with guilt and anxiety than anything else. not over his sexuality, but with the fear of being perceived as being immoral.

Yes, it is about a teenage lesbian hooker. See Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver.

However, it also has reference to both Alice B Toklas, a huge feminist and lesbian inspiration at the time.

Also consider Jefferson Airplane's "Go ask Alice" as well as the FICTIONAL book "Go Ask Alice" (the whole book was made up, but it was firmly planted in any teenager's reading list at the time. Propaganda lives!

I don't think Alice was really a lesbian... I think that the only place she was ever accepted or felt any sort of love was when she was with her female clients (a simple cause of Mummy-doesn't-love-me blues), because as stated in the song, "she couldn't get it on with the boys on the scene," so it HAD to be girls, even if she didn't really feel any sexual attraction to them herself. I mean, consider the line, "It's like acting in a movie when you've got the wrong part." She was living this lesbian life because that's the only place she could find love, but it wasn't really who she was and it was killing her inside. I agree it was a suicide, because she just couldn't stand living a life where the only love she had was sexual and unrequited.

This was my favorite album of my tweener years. Alice, Saturday Night, Sweet Painted Lady. Its a beautiful, harsh dish of life. Very 70's a la Taxi Driver. I still love this album and this song. What I'm hearing in it now after the thousandth listen is more of the grit. Alice, Lesbian, maybe only by practice only. Meaning she's doing whatever you have to do to get by in the City. NYC. I picture her death on the subway being a heroin OD. I'm thinking the German movie 'Christian F' that came out around the same time around drugs and alienation in cold war Germany. Very harsh, gritty fluorescent bleak taste of life. Alice.

It could be about Alice Cooper. Or not. Thats the beauty of art. We can interpret however we want to.

My Interpretation

Indeed, about a teenage lesbian prostitute who couldn't score with any boys, but gets her business through married people who don't want their husbands to find out about their secret pleasure. Sadly, Alice dies.

Favorite line: "One or two middle-aged dykes in a Go-Go"

the sorta fuzzy guitars really add to the sleaze of the whole thing, which makes it even more fantastic.
