i cannot believe no one has commented on this song, i heard it when i was a little girl but never really picked up on the words...its about a young girl who is all mixed up, she just couldnt get with any boys so i guess she's having sex with other girls, hence all the girls love alice, gettin you kicks in another girls bed, two middle aged dykes in a Go-Go, i guess in the end she ends up dead, at only 16. its actually a really good song but sometimes listening to it upsets me, i feel bad for alice and i wonder if she is somone elton met when he was struggling with coming to terms with his sexuality.

Actually according to the liner notes on one of Elton's best of albums the song was initially written as a tribute to Alice Cooper but got re-written to reflect a prostitute or lesbian.

well, to say that its about a 16 year old prostitute is to say the sun is hot. it's taupin's attempt of being on the inside and trying to connect with elton john's battles with his sexuality. it has more to do with guilt and anxiety than anything else. not over his sexuality, but with the fear of being perceived as being immoral.

I don't think Alice was really a lesbian... I think that the only place she was ever accepted or felt any sort of love was when she was with her female clients (a simple cause of Mummy-doesn't-love-me blues), because as stated in the song, "she couldn't get it on with the boys on the scene," so it HAD to be girls, even if she didn't really feel any sexual attraction to them herself. I mean, consider the line, "It's like acting in a movie when you've got the wrong part." She was living this lesbian life because that's the only place she could find love, but it wasn't really who she was and it was killing her inside. I agree it was a suicide, because she just couldn't stand living a life where the only love she had was sexual and unrequited.
This was my favorite album of my tweener years. Alice, Saturday Night, Sweet Painted Lady. Its a beautiful, harsh dish of life. Very 70's a la Taxi Driver. I still love this album and this song.
