"Do what I have to"
Remember Emily?
"That's a long time" [2x]
In a long dress one summer day she said yes
Now every special request requires another
So many times it feels endless, a big yes
Branded red on each breast
But she selfless out there
Doing her best strangest thing
Nobody seemed to be impressed.
The more she do for this fool
The more she behind schedule
Had no fun for so long
Old records turned her onto High School flings
And she was full of daring

Colourful hair, used to wear thirteen rings
Now she staring drudgery
Full in the face and accepts it as her place
And just in case there's anything she missed,
She recheck the list
Does it over again,
To make sure it's spotless.

Jimmy longed for how it used to be,
She was viscous and volatile
She was feisty, iced tea was the tipple never asked nicely,
Her lips used to curl down ever so slightly, impolite,
Fire burned bright behind the Oakleys,
He just had to get to grips.

After a few long sips juice begin to lose flavour,
She no longer gets to savour being consumed.
Jimmy asleep drunk in the other room still in his shoes
Escaping headlong into the booze,
The whole house vibrating with the changes of moods.

From feisty she turned into "be nice to me"
In the old days he'd 've been wearing Ice T,
Jimmy prayed those times times returned,
She was fine and so beautifully unconcerned.

Jimmy told her, on the day he quit
"You don't love me you love the relationship"

Me?
I'm the progeny product of Misogeny,
Jimmy and Emily's homogeny
They promised me nothing but honesty, huh,
And that's all I got,
I could never be the cement in their destiny,
They still haven't forgiven me,
You know my own woman's leaving me
Said she stopped believing me,
Can't even see what she saw in me,
I told my woman she was beautiful,
She didn't believe,
Convinced herself I was preparing to leave,
so she took my son and left the world to freeze.

I told my woman she was beautiful Ten Times a Day,
Ten Times a Day she'd Smile, and look away.

I end up throwing my love down a bottomless pit.
And giving myself away...

Quite a thoughtful song. Doesn't give too much away about what it means. However, I believe the narrator is good friends with Emily and Jimmy, who are married. She doesnt like the married life, and remembers the fun she had when she was young. She has an affair with the narrator, who we eventually find out has a wife and a child (who have since left him).

Great work Maxi - I don't think I could find a better example of poetry in music.

Great song! The melody complements the lyrics so incredibly well!

I think this is about relationships going down the tubes, with time taking its toll and basically consuming the people involved. The change from being a feisty, cheerful person to having a monotonous and miserable life.

In the beginning there is an outsider's perspective, someone who notices how two people have changed as a result of their marriage. Then we get a glimpse of the narrator's perspective from the inside: him telling his partner she was beautiful, her never believing, and the whole thing falling apart.

Some parts of the lyrics above are incorrectly spelled. E.g. "Me? I'm the progeny; product of misogyny, Jimmy and Emily's homogeny."

I don't think there was an affair between Emily and the narrator. The narrator hints at being their prodigy and not being able to "cement" their destiny. Maybe the narrator is their son (being a witness to Jimmy and Emily)? And now, in turn, his partner left him. That's how I see it.

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

Techno Ted

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
