Sorry
Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
Words don't come easily
Like sorry like sorry

Forgive me
Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
Words don't come easily
Like forgive me forgive me

But you can say baby
Baby can I hold you tonight
Maybe if I told you the right words
At the right time you'd be mine

I love you
Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
Words don't come easily
Like I love you I love you

But you can say baby
Baby can I hold you tonight
Maybe if I told you the right words
At the right time you'd be mine

Baby can I hold you tonight
Maybe if I told you the right words
At the right time you'd be mine

You'd be mine
You'd be mine

Well, whatever the real meaning behind the song is. It's beautiful, let's all agree on that?

To me it's about how you don't have the right words to say. You don't have the words to say that you love someone or that you're sorry but you can simply hold them and express your love. If that made any sense at all.

You're all wrong here! You'd don't understand the song. I know it's been 9 years, but I want to say, even though the people who wrote most of the comments, will never probably read it. It's actually about a woman, telling about her relationship with someone, explaining HER own mistakes and how hard it is for HER, and for all people, to express your true feelings to someone, and let them know how much you really love them, and this song may not even be about a lover at all, it could very well be about a friend. It's like if she had told someone the right words, that person may have stayed, but she hadn't, and so at the moment of the song, it's about that. How life works, why it's the way it is and not the other way around. It's philosophical. It's not just about "a man who didn't treat her right", it's about Her, and ... Heck, it may not even be about a man, - you know what I think? I think it's most likely about a Woman.

It is about a mistake she made and is sorry for. She made a BIG mistake and wants to apologize for it but she doesn't have the courage. She is imagining what the other person say... But you can say baby Baby can I hold you tonight Maybe if I told you the right words At the right time you'd be mine

I think this song is about making mistakes, and being unable to find the words to say that you were wrong. However, the person is still able to express love and wants things to be okay. They just don't know how to fix it, without damaging their pride.

And yes, we can definitely agree that it is beautiful.

This song always makes me cry...

"Baby can I hold you tonight Maybe if I told you the right words At the right time you'd be mine"

I just let her get away...I loved this girl and she felt the same but she was getting married. She was waiting for me, and I did nothing and i will always regret not doing anything. If I told her the right words...she'd be mine.

This song is about making mistakes and the regret you feel after making them.

But more importantly, the singer is in a situation where saying 'sorry' or 'forgive me' is not appropriate or maybe even unacceptable.

It's a bit philosophical in a way. There are some things you can't take back or apologize for. And it doesn't have to be something really bad or dramatic (like cheating). It can be a small thing.

The singer lost someone she really loves and there's nothing she can do about it...

    Memory

This song saved my relationship with my beautiful and lovely wife more than once. When I've messed up once again (alcohol!), the song suddenly appears, be it live sung by a street performer on that beautiful square in Milano, or just an hour ago in the lobby when I left the movie theatre. I hope it will once again work for me to genuinly say "I love you" and "I'm sorry". And "baby can I hold you tonight?"

This song always make me cry. For better and worse.

NO! i really disagree! he clearly lacks how to show his feelings vocally and wants to show her physically. it aint just sex for these two, its making love!

I guess the man makes up for things by "holding her" and making her feel loved when he messes up but doesn't say sorry. Like everyone else says

Lovely, lovely song. One of my all-time favorites. Both sweet and sad, hopeful. Has anyone heard the version of the song where Chapman duets with Pavarotti? They alternate on verses, with her doing hers in English and him doing his in Italian. It's a little cheesy but still effective. I don't think anyone could ruin this song. It's featured on the DVD/Album "Pavarotti and Friends for Cambodia and Tibet."
