I Was There Lyrics

Looking back upon my life
And the places that I've been
Pictures, faces, girls I've loved
I try to remember when
Faded memories on the wall
Some names I have forgotten
But each one is a memory I
Look back on so often.

I look into the past
I want to make it last
I was there

I look into the past
I want to make it last
I was there

Looking back what I have done
There's lots more life to live
At times I feel overwhelmed
I question what I can give
But I don't let it get me down
Or cause me too much sorrow
There's no doubt about who I am
I always have tomorrow

I look into the past
I want to make it last
I was there

I look into the past
I want to make it last
I was there

Looking back upon my life
Faded memories on the wall
Looking now at who I am
I don't let it get me down.

Looking back upon my life
And the places that I've been
Pictures, faces, girls I've loved
I try to remember when
But I don't let it get me down
Or cause me too much sorrow
There's no doubt about who I am
I always have tomorrow

I look into the past
I want to make it last
I was there

I look into the past
I want to make it last
I was there

Billie didn't write this song. John, their old drummer did.

I'm not exactly blown away by 1039, but I love this song. To pieces.

Let's just put aside the artistic semantics for one moment; this song oozes with that energy they had in their early days. It's almost a child-like energy, whereas American Idiot for example has a more mature, political energy to it. But whenever I listen to their older stuff, particularly their thoughts on the past and future (Android comes to mind), I can just imagine BJA and MD rocking it as a couple of tearaway teens in some dingy backstreet location.

Oh, to be nostalgic.

Aww well i felt bad that no one posted anything about this song...so i thought what the hey. I think this song is about reflecting on your past and not wanting to forget all the memories that you have from all the years of your life and trying to figure out who you are in life...very inspirational song.

I agree totally. How ironic that some of their earliest stuff was also their most optimistic.

Naïve optimism.... lol

Yeah, I agree...though a lot fo stuff comes from experience and Green Day were pretty young when the first recorded. (actually, Billie Joe was only 12 years old when he sang and recorded "Why Do You Want Him") but I think the band were in their late teens when they recorded 1,039 SOSH. However, BJ is very happy with his marriage and family life, so newer songs are being a little more optimistic.

he was 14 when he wrote why do you want him and 16 when him, john and mike recorded why do you want him?, 16, best thing in town, strangeland, sweet children and my generation (the who cover). Great song though. They were 19 when they recorded 39/smooth, and i think 18 for the 2 ep's

yes green dave, you are right. i reallly like this song.

i was kind of dissapointed though when i found out billie didn't write this song. it's one of the best songs on 1,039/smoothed out...

I always see this song as the optimistic counterpoint to "16." "16" is insecure and afraid of the future while this song embraces the possibilities. The song seems to reflect the 2 distinct attitudes people have about growing up.

Is about looking to the past, and holding on to the memories... I like thinking where you had been, what you had done. Is like afereating to the past, I totally relate to this song... you want to turn back time and live again... but sometimes you need of the memories to find out who you are. Is a bit ironic... just as life.

Looking into the past. As easy as that.
