Heaven can wait,
And a band of Angels wrapped up in my heart,
Will take me through the lonely night,
Through the cold of the day.
And I know, I know,
Heaven can wait,
And all the gods come down here just to sing for me,
And the melody's gonna make me fly,
Without pain, without fear.

Give me all of your dreams,
And let me go alone on your way.
Give me all of your prayers to sing,
And I'll turn the night into the skylight of day.
I got a taste of paradise,
I'm never gonna let it slip away.
I got a taste of paradise,
It's all I really need to make me stay
Just like a child again.

Heaven can wait.
And all I've got is time until the end of time.
I won't look back.
I won't look back.
Let the altars shine.

And I know that I've been released,
But I don't know to where,
And nobody's gonna tell me now,
And I don't really care. No, no, no.
I got a taste of paradise.
That's all I really need to make me stay.
I got a taste of paradise.
If I had it any sooner you know
You know I never would have run away from my home.

Heaven can wait.
And all I've got is time until the end of time.
I won't look back.
I won't look back.
Let the altars shine.

Heaven can wait.
Heaven can wait.
I won't look back.
I won't look back.
Let the altars shine.
Let the altars shine.

Sounds to me like this guy is dying but can't die until he tells this girl how he feels about her. Probably a metaphor though.

one of my favorite songs of meatloaf. i think he's trying to say that love conquers even death - 'heaven can wait'

this was originally written for a peter pan musical and so is really about something in there. I haven't seen it so I don't know what.

    My Interpretation

Well, to me it isn't necessary a lovesong. It's more like finding something to believe in and to cope with life...it could be love but also something different. I think this person was always very pessimistic about life but now he found something beautiful that made him realize that being alive isn't bad at all (I got a taste of paradise, It's all I really need to make me stay). He sees everything from a different point and realizes all his opportuneties (And I know that I've been released, But I don't know to where). However, after all he isn't scared to die because he knows it's how its supposed to be (And all the gods come down here just to sing for me, And the melody's gonna make me fly, Without pain, without fear.).

Stunningly beautiful song this. And really demonstrates Meatloafs serious vocal talent.

I think it is about someone who realises what he used to have just before he almost loses it, and so wants to hold onto it for ever. The seeking after "heaven" - something he cannot quite get to will have to wait while he deals with the here and now.

this song is so beautiful just the mix of the piano and meatloafs amazing voice i think it is about a guy who is dying but loves this girl just too much to leave just yet the lyrics are gorgeous and demonstrate and it amazes me how much love a man can have for a woman

Another idea I get is that this guy has died and he's supposed to go to Heaven but wants to stay on Earth to get one last glance at his girl, then he will go and not look back on his life.

    Song Meaning

It's definately about Neverland, a musical Jim Steinman wrote in the 1970's, loosely based on Peter Pan. I have an audio copy of a workshop session of the musical myself and this tune is on there (Along with some other Meat Loaf songs). What it's about in the musical itself I don't want to answer.

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
