Torn from the heavens, they fall from the sky
And walk the streets among mortal men
They hide in shadows,
Keepers of the night

Mortal life is weak,
Can't hold back the demons
The blood pours as rain
And soon you'll be alone

Descending angel
Stand by my side
We'll face the night
Descending angel

We guard the gates of hell just one more night
For in the morning will bring the light

Born and created in the image of a god
The heavens fall no savior has been sent
No one to guide us,
Alone we face the night

Mortal life is brief for the rebel angels
They make their final stand

And soon you'll be alone
Descending angel
Stand by my side
And face the night

Descending angel
We'll guard the gates of hell just one more night
Forever ends tonight!

I saw the Misfits a few months ago. Before they played this song, Jerry dedicated it to someone who had recently died. To me, this is probably the deepest and most meaningful Misfits song ever written. Descending Angel is not about a movie. It's about losing a loved one. Think about it.

Okay, let me break it down for the dumbf*cks who post things like: "I like dis song, ha ha."

Descending Angel = That extremely rare person who is so good it almost seems like they don't belong down here with the rest of us.

Guarding the gates of hell = Protecting the ones you love from pain.

Facing the night = Facing death.

Hiding in shadows = Not realizing how great a person is, until they're gone.

Forever ends tonight = Being able to see your loved ones again (when you die, too).

This has gotta be based off of some kinda movie, lol. Really tho, this song portrays quite a nice story of angels descending in an attempt to save humanity. I like^^!

I'm still pretty sure this is about Prophecy. I'm not sure why someone would be so adamant about the meaning of this song being purely about losing a loved one. Going by the common theme of the Misfits, it is safe to assume it is about a movie, and the lyrics seem like they could easily apply to Prophecy (maybe 2 as well, like mentioned previously). That being said, the great thing about fiction and art (poems, songs, literature, movies, etc) is that it can mean different things to different people. If it means something to you, and you like that reading of said work, then regardless of whether it was what the artist intended, it is still a meaning. There is vast amounts of theory based on this subject... feel free to check it out. Basically what I'm saying here is if you like it being about a lost love, or religion in general, or the bible, or whatever, then preserve that meaning as what it means to you. Don't let anyone correct you.

All that aside, I'm still fairly certain it is about Prophecy... if not, something very similar. Most of the interpretation that comes previous here is reading in. The metaphors do not define themselves, really, it is just an application of what an individual wants it to mean.

    My Interpretation

Seems to me to be based off of the Book of Enoch, which was omitted from the Bible. The group of angels that were following Satan were cast down to the Earth to watch over it. The fallen angels were not supposed to interact with the humans. They ended up teaching humans about astrology, how to make weapons and medicine, among many other things, basically advancing the human race. The angels also ended up fornicating with the humans, producing the Nephilim. God was angry at the angels for this, and cast them into the abyss. Years later, the great flood was initiated to wipe off all of the offspring Nephilim.

Anyways, to the meaning of the song, I believe the narrarator is a human wanting to learn as much as possible from, and maybe wanting to reproduce with, the angels.

This song reminds me deeply of Gantz: "Keepers of the night" and "Guard the gates of hell" to me is a reference to the nights they are called to battle demons and defend mankind. "No one to guide us": why they are called and how they should fight is all a mistery . The phrases "Mortal life is weak" and "Mortal life is brief" reminds me of the countless and gruesome deaths from the story of Gantz.

My interpretation of this song is about an alternate ending to the book of Revelations in the Bible. What if in the final battle God loses? Heaven falls and Lucifer is victorious. God's army is defeated and there is no 2nd coming. The prophecy was wrong and humanity is doomed to eternal damnation.

Reference Dante’s Inferno. The lyrics seem to all be derived very directly from that book. Fallen angels cast down from Heaven. The thirteenth fallen Angel was the “shadow of God”. Lot of references that sound like it is from the Inferno

I think it's about religion. A great uplifting message , if you look at it that way.
