I forget when words were only words
She knows the party makes me nervous
In this stage we can't get hurt
Don't try to understand me

We're too cool to be alone
But, not too crazy to get busted

I found out one life just ain't enough
I need another soul to feed on
I'm the flame I can't get burnt
I'm wholly understated

I found solace in this space
An on and off again attraction
I need such amazing grace
Heaven sweep me away

Love don't change, don't come around here
Don't wear my heart on your sleeve
Like a high school letter
Don't strain, 'cause nothing ever comes from it
And the people we've become, well
They've never been the people who we are

I strapped on one horse and prayed for luck
I dug another hole to bleed
I know exactly how this works
I need a new feel dirty

I don't need you crowding up my space
I just want to get inside you, inside
You can't blame the heart you save
Giving something away

Love don't change, don't come around here
Don't wear my heart on your sleeve
Like a high school letter
Don't strain, 'cause nothing ever comes from it
And the people we've become, well
They've never been the people who we are
Don't strain, don't come around here
Don't mistake something more for something better
Don't strain, 'cause nothing ever comes from it
And the people we've become, well
They've never been the people who we are
Who we are, yeah

I dreamed that the world was crumbling down
We sat on my back porch and watched it

I dreamed that the buildings all fell down
We sat on my back porch and watched it

I dreamed that the world was crumbling down
We sat on my back porch and watched it
In my head I heard the sound
Like fifteen strangers dancing

But oh how I want you to know me
Oh how I want you to know me
Oh how I wish I was somebody else, baby
Oh how I wish you could own me

Love don't change, don't come around here
Don't wear my heart on your sleeve
Like a high school letter
Don't strain, 'cause nothing ever comes from it
And the people we've become, well
They've never been the people who we are

Don't change, don't come around here
Don't wear my heart on your sleeve
Like a high school letter
Don't strain, 'cause nothing ever comes from it
And the people we've become, well
They've never been the people who we are
Who we are, who we are, yeah

"...I strap on one horse and prayed for luck I dug another hole to bleed I know exactly how this works I need a new feel dirty..."

to go along with twister62's idea.... its about a purely sexual relationship... ...

quite bluntly... the "horse" is a condom (trojan) and hes hoping he doesnt get her pregnant...

"hole to bleed": him having sex with her is his release... he feels relived of his stress(sorrow, etc.) when they fuck... (hence the praing for luck with the condom)

the rest is him realizing that this release is becoming old... it no longer has the same effect on him as it once had... he needs to find something new....

out of every matchbox20 and tabithas secret songs.. this is my favorite... it has such emotion and meaning....

I think this is about a guy who has a girlfriend (that takes him to parties and so on knowing he is uncomfortable) so he strays. He knows they may get "busted" but he always goes back to the mistress, straps on a condom and prays for the best. He needs to feel the thrill to feel alive. The buildings falling down is a metaphor for while they are in the "act". Everything in his life is falling apart but in that moment, he is at peace. The dancers represent the euphoric feeling of release. Amazing, thought provoking, and anguishy song!

I think it's about people who sleep together. He's got this thing going on with this girl where there's a purely physical attraction and things tend to happen when they're together. But that's it.

I don't need you crowding up my space I just want to get inside you

A part of him wants to be with her for real:

Oh, how I want you to know me Oh, how I wish I was somebody else, baby Oh, how I wish you could own me

But ultimately he's not ready for that kind of commitment.

I am the flame, I can't get burned.

He's reminding her that it's just sex, nothing more.

I strap on one horse and prayed for luck I dug another hole to bleed I know exactly how this works I need a new feel dirty

Quite possibly the stupidest lines ever.

I love the way Rob Thomas' voice sounds on the part but I'm not sure how these lyrics fit into the song

imo, its about a young relationship that starts really powerful, but after spending too much time together, it turns into a physical relationship with no emotion involved, although they think there is because thats what they are used to. and the song goes through the process of realizing this.

Basically I see this as being like Twister62 said. This is very much about sex. They start it out as kind of a fling type thing then when he thinks about turning into a relationship they feel it all come apart. He isn't going to let it get to him since nothing was ever started anyway though.

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone). And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

Techno Ted
Audioslave
Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.
