read on baby, what you’re gettin in to
it’s livin on pain, the thing that’s getting to you
write my name, painted up my picture
say it’s the only thanks I’m not around (around)
beaten and battered
well if my dreams get shattered, then
pain gives my the right to be unkind
wait on baby which with some indevotion
I trade a river of tears for just a little emotion
you can curse my name, painted up my picture
say it’s the last time that I’ll be around (be around)
oh well I’m torn and tattered,
saw the thoughts in my head be scattered, well
pain gives my the right to be unkind yeah
and it sets me

CHORUS:
right back to the heart of it
Joan’s crazy is a sly defense from it
Joan’s crazy is a place I call my own, when I’m alone

read on baby, what you’re gettin in to
I swear once that it was the little things that mattered
but it all seems true to you
say the hell with my name, and say the hell with my picture
yeah but swear the one time you need me around, be around, i’m around right now well
I’ll stand like it matters
only once got screwy things got scattered by the rain
pain gives me the right to be unkind

(CHORUS) x 3

These lyrics suck, "bring it on baby" is used several times. "bring it on baby, what's with sudden devotion, I'd trade a river of tears for just a little emotion." best words of the song and the person had to screw it up

I don't understand you Phrenchron...you contradict yourself saying Awsome song..then saying "these lyrics suck"....??????

And if you were a true Matchbox twenty fan....you wouldn't of wrote...20. You would of spelled it out.

actually, kinslayer, you are stupid. The song is great. This person's interpretation of the lyrics is what sucks. Also, the band has had three stages. They were Tabitha's Secret, then they were Matchbox 20, then they progressed to Matchobox Twenty... smart ass...

I'm actually a huge fan of this song, although I have to admit some of the lyrics don't quite work for me. I'm also relatively sure that several of the lyrics above are wrong. I'm also not quite sure why all of TS's songs are in MB's section, but I guess they're close enough to the same band...If you like this song, see if you can find either And Around or Blue Monday, also by Tabitha's Secret, they're similar and also both great songs.

This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone). And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

Ministry
Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
