Darkness Lyrics

I can dream up schemes when I'm sitting in my seat
I don't see any flaws till I get to my feet
I wish I never woke up this morning
Life was easy when it was boring

I could make a mark if it weren't so dark
I could be replaced by any bright spark
But darkness makes me fumble
For a key
To a door
So wide open

Instead of worrying about my clothes
I could be someone that nobody knows
I wish I never woke up this morning
Life was easy when it was boring

I can dream up schemes when I'm sitting in my seat
I don't see any flaws till I get to my feet
I wish I never woke up this morning
Life was easy when it was boring

Beautiful Song...

I think it's about being famous - to an extent - and being a singer, a song writer. "I can dream up schemes when I'm sitting in my seat" "Life was easy when it was boring "

This song is clearly about being famous but I relate to the song on another level about depression and even suicide. I love this song. It's just great. I found out about this song because it was on Robert Downey Jr's Itunes playlist.

One of my favorite lyric works ever. Such catchy lines! "I could make a mark if it weren't so dark / I could be replaced by any bright spark"... A masterpiece.

When you are famous you are always on the move it seems, and how being a musician and song writer isnt as easy as it sounds, thats what it is sheding light on.

This song creates such a sad but beautiful atmosphere around me everytime I listen to it!

At first, it sounds as if it was just describing the feelings of someone who's suffering from a depression at the moment. However, with the lines "I could be replaced by any bright star" and "Instead of worrying about my clothes ..." they make it very clear that it's about the dark sides of being famous.

I also love the line "Life was easy when it was boring" - this is somehow true, I often thought the same during the more exciting but also exhausting periods in my life.

I also take issue with George's harsh asessment. (though we're each entitled to our repective opinions, thats why we're here) I think the spare repetitive melody is supposed to be a sort of meditation. A lacrimose meditative song reminding me of places I've ofte n gone, lament when i've finaaly arrived, leave, and immediatley plot my return to. Life's cycle of want to want. The grass seems greener over there- isms.

Never knew this was written by Copeland! Just goes to show how The Police wasn't just Sting with back up musicians. Copeland and Summers definitely added more flavor to the band.

To be honest I didn't love Ghost when I first heard it. I didn't get the added tracking on Stings voice back then. But it definitely grew on me as it feels like a futuristic concept album, not far off from Dark Side of the Moon.

Darkness is one of the most soothing songs that can lull you to sleep. The combination of Stings baseline and soft piano gives off the sensation of floating in space or on a raft being rocked by gentle water. Copelands echoing percussion sounds like soft thunder fading in the distance.

One of my favorite calming songs to doze off to in the deep of the night

I agree with what was said before to a point. My opinion is that this song is about the struggle a creative person has with life.

Imo, the song is about a creative person and about the struggles this person has in their day to day life. What I mean by creative person is someone who makes art, not only music but visual arts, writers and bank robbers aswell. If you are consistent, you can achieve a bit of success in any field of activity you enjoy.

"Dreaming up schemes while sitting in ones seat" is something I experienced and still experience to date. It's about working on something consistently for hours and hours during one day or several. "I don't see any flaws until I get to my feet" is the moment we disconnect from our creation and we realise that what we worked on is not as great as we thought it was. As a musician, this usually happens to me most of the times the next day after recording. As the recording comes to a close, we're full of adrenaline and the next day when listening to the song, we start seeing flaws and things that can be removed/added or scrapped altogether.

When you are going through a tough time creatively, let's say 5 - 6 months of recordings where nothing seems to stick, you start questioning your way of work, your creativity, your influences and this can get horrible to handle, hence the "I wish I never woke up this morning, Life was easy when it was boring"

The next verse is about one's creative input. "I could make up big words so dark" This is about realising what we think it's awesome, wordplays or color schemes that we think are unique or intricate.

"I could be replaced by any bright spark" is about the realisation that whatever we do, how great our wordplay or color schemes we develop, there is someone even more talented and hard working who is going to do something greater than us with all the modesty possible.

"But Darkness makes me fumble for a key to a door that's wide open". I have 2 ways to think about this.

  1. Realising the self depreciating thoughts you have are your only enemy. Because your have something to say if you are an artist. You can't shut the voice inside your head that guides you to do art. I will make a difficult comparisson but I feel that artists are not too different than murderes as we'd like to think. We have something in common that aches to be let out. Be it distructive or constructive. Musicians think about murder and write songs about what they feel while murderes actually act upon the thought. It's ok to have the thoughts. We are human and we are animals at our core, the sooner we realise this, the better.

  2. The destructive power alcohol and drugs have on our minds. I'm by no mean straight edge but I there are alot of moments where I grasped to alcohol just because I thought that would be the answer to a creative block when the answer was right in front of me.

"Instead of worring about my clothes, I can be someone that nobody knows" is as much someone who already is successful, as someone who wants to be successful. You can change "clothes" with anything from the way you speak, the way you act or the way you show your emotions in public. There is a "persona" most musicians show when they are on stage without letting too much of their actual self show. Not that having a persona is bad by no means necessary, sometimes we have to be the ones even though we don't feel like it, because just showing up and telling everyone to flub off bc you have a bad day and you won't give 100% for the people who pay your tickets is an absolute no-no for the public. Sometimes we must allow the persona to take over ourselves to we could deliver the show. The persona doesn't care about what problems one had during the day, or if it does, it's not gonna be crying about it, only if that's what the persona is all about. And sometimes this persona makes us question ourselves when going to sleep after doing something that we didn't wanna do but we needed to do like.. let's say a wedding. You can't show up to the wedding as the singer after having a bad day and telling everyone how bad you feel today.

Humble opinion.

My Interpretation

… and Copeland's 'Darkness' ends the album on a boring repetitive note, which is fine by me, because the song's message itself is 'life is easy when it was boring'. [George Starostin
