Does Everyone Stare Lyrics

I change my clothes ten times before I take you on a date
I'm in a cold sweat, I panic, and it makes me late
I knew you never asked for this
I know
My shots will always misfire
My shots will always miss

Does everyone stare this way at you?
I only look this way at you

I change my clothes ten times before I take you on a date
I get the heebie-jeebies, and my panic makes me late
I break into a cold sweat reaching for the phone
I let it ring twice before I chicken out and decide you're not at home

Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you

I never noticed the size of my feet
Until I kicked you in the shins
Will you ever forgive me
For the shape I'm in
For the shape I'm in

Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you

I'm gonna write you a sonnet but I don't know where to start
I'm so used to laughing at the things in my heart
Last of all I'm sorry 'cos you never asked for this
I can see I'm not your type and my shot will always miss, always miss

Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you

Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you

Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you

Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you

Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you

Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you

Oh, I forgot to mention something really important, this AWSOME song was written my Mr. Stewart Copeland

@Tepes It is funny that a nice looking rock star like sting would write lyrics like this, or "i decide to call her up a thousand times a day..."

yeah! totally. that lyrics coming from Sting is something I would never believe. Btw, it's been 10 years since I wrote that comment, wow!

very nice song indeed.. but didn't seem to get part of the lyrics.. can someone try to explain me or give opinion about this part: I never noticed the size of my feet Until I kicked you in the shins Will you ever forgive me For the shape I'm in For the shape I'm in regards.

@chilinomore imo it's figurative and means I never realized how much I could hurt someone until I did, or I didn't know my strength, forgive me for being me

he's literally just saying how he's awkward and kicked her in the shins, which made him realize what big feet he has

@chilinomore, I always assumed he was dancing clumsily with her.

Re the opera on the intro; I've heard a radio interview with the band aeons ago where they explain it was just radio interference with the low fi recording equipment, but as it came in almost on time and on key and they liked the effect, they left it in. Stuart Copeland confirmed this on Twitter a couple if years back.

I like to think that both halves of the relationship are represented here-- Copeland at the beginning with one, and then Sting representing the other person for the rest. Both are staring with intensity. It's sweet.

My Interpretation

as an awkward young guy I can relate to this a lot...lol

I can't believe how no one has commented on this song yet, and many other Police songs on this site. Anyway, I think this is a very pretty straight forward song about a guy who's in love with a woman but he really lacks self-confidence. That's why he sweats so much and talks about his big feet. I love how the piano riff bends with the actual music in the intro, and Sting's whisper is awesome. I like how he says "heebie-jeebies"! it's funny. anyway, probably nobody is gonna read this, but meh... Best line in the song: "I let it ring twice before I chicken out and decide you're not at home", how many times have we done that huh?

Don't worry Tepes, you're not alone in thinking that there is a lack of postings for The Police songs. Check out my posting for "O My God". "Does Everyone Stare" is one of my favourite obscure Police songs. Having Copeland sing the first stanza, I think, makes the song. His nervous, shaky voice epitomizes what the song is trying to say. Another great Stewart Copeland written song - "On Any Other Day" - is also on Regatta de Blanc.

The intro to this song with the piano and Copeland doing vocals is actually the demo mixed in as an intro with the rest of the song. If you notice their is opera playing at the end of the intro... supposedly that was some of the music they were influenced by at the time.

The fade from the intro with Copeland speaking over amateurish tinkling on the piano to the sung portion with Sting gradually increasing his volume with full instrumental backup (and the operatic note inbetween) is a wonderful portion of the song, as IvoKent says. Forget about the lyrics for a moment: this is Sting upstaging his bandmate, and knowing that there would be tensions along these lines that eventually would destroy the band, the beginning of this song seems like it might have been an example of the kind of thing Copeland wasn't very happy about. It's exciting listening to it from the perspective of the lyrics, though, as well as from the perspective of the Sting-Copeland[-Summers] relationship.

I do agree with the critics, however, that Copeland's third song on here, 'Does Everyone Stare', is radically different from the rest of the endless groove and is based more on German cabaret melodies than "white reggae". But it's nice and catchy anyway, and my golden rule #1 is this: if a song is good, it's good. Who cares if it disrupts a 'perfectly flowing' album? If it is really good, you'll get used to it anyway; if you can't get used to it, it wasn't that good in the first place. The Police might have inserted a doo-wop number in between 'Bring On The Night' and 'Deathwish' for all I care; if it were good, you wouldn't hear me complaining. [George Starostin]
