Next To You Lyrics

I can't stand it for another day
When you live so many miles away
Nothing here is gonna make me stay
You took me over, let me find a way

I sold my house, I sold my motor too
All I want is to be next to you
I'd rob a bank, maybe steal a plane
You took me over, think I'm goin' insane

What can I do
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do
All I want is to be next to you

I've had a thousand girls or maybe more
But I've never felt like this before
But I just don't know what's come over me
You took me over, take a look at me

What can I do
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do,
All I want is to be next to you

All I want is to be next to you
All I want is to be next to you
All I want is to be next to you

So many times I used to give a sign
Got this feeling, gonna lose my mind
When all it is is just a love affair
You took me over baby, take me there

What can I do
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do
All I want is to be next to you

All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?

{fade}

All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?
All I want is to be next to you
What can I do?

If it's 1978, you're a new band and you wanna make your impact on the artistic scene, you just have to begin your first record with a punk song. The Police were actually never a punk band, although for some reason some people I know do call this a 'punk' album. Just because it begins with 'Next To You', which is the closest the band ever came to punk, but it's still not quite punk - maybe Copeland bashes away like mad and Sting does his best to rave like an angry young punker (which he certainly isn't as good at as he is at sounding like a relaxed young reggae worshipper), but the actual guitar melody, not to count the cute catchy refrain, are anything but punk. Which doesn't mean the song is bad! One of the few bands in existence that considered it a dishonor to do 'filler' tracks, the Police make their first album tight and so consistent it hurts. About a guy who'd do anything to be with his girl.

Love it! The melody is so catchy and the lyrics are just sweet.

He's totally in love, maybe for the first time (as he had never felt the same with the "thousand" girls he had before), and actually can't believe this big thing called love is happening to him ("goin' insane" and "I just don't know what's come over me").

PS: I certainly wouldn't mind being next to young Sting or The Police at all! ;-) But unfortunately I wasn't even born back at that time. g

Parted from and missing a lover, a man think back over the past when he was Next to You. (her). The man of the tale is a Brit. Our Englishman happily visits New York. Did he meet her there? We don’t know. It’s only a story. We’ll say he did. And every little thing she does is magic. But oh, he has committed a faux pas–sounds like a major faux pas–and he’s hanging his head, wondering if she will be his ain true love. Meanwhile she is perhaps doing what she always has and earning her bucks or perhaps miffed, she’s just out visiting others and he feels betrayed. Poetic license. She’s back and he’s happy, recalling when we dance. But things still don’t work out and it’s the end of the game. He’s left burning for her while they’re both off busy working the black seam. She was too good for him anyhow. Still he wants his pirate queen back. She goes straight to his heart on bonus tracks but he wonders why he should cry for her and feels down whenever he says her name on bonus tracks. A creative little tale with a few stretches that he probably didn’t even notice when he was putting tracks for Symphonicities together because it’s not the tale of how he and his lovely wife met.
How clever of you, Al. I was amused.
Merci, my dear ...
