Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.
Yes
It's been long
And yes
I still feel strong
Into the half light
Another velvet morning for me, yeah
Time
Stands still
As you take
Your last pill
Into the half light
Another velvet morning for me
And now I'm trying to tell you
About my life
And my tongue is twisted
And more dead than alive
And my feelings
They've always been betrayed
And I was born a little damaged man
And look what they made
I said, don't you find
That it's lonely
The corridor
You walk there alone
And life is a game
You've tried
And life is a game
You're tired
Yes
I'm coming down
Your beauty is
A color surround
Into the half light
Another velvet morning for me
And now I'm trying to tell you
About my life
And my tongue is twisted
And more dead than alive
And my feelings
My feelings, they've been betrayed
And I was born a little damaged man
And look what they made
He said, don't you find
That it's lonely
The corridor
You walk there alone
And life is a game
You've tried
And life is a game

And life is a game
You've tried

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
The Night We Met
Lord Huron
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
one summer when we used to go off to the forest and have a mad night on pills and shit this song was played in the morning, and i swear it seemed as though it was written for the very purpose of that moment. a velvet morning, to me, is when your beginning to come down and the sun is rising through the trees (last pill + yes im coming down reference). the surreal confidence driven realisations you experience when you have the kind of nights i did seemed 110% compatible with every word in these lyrics. this song is about that crystallizing moment where reality spirals so far away from recognition that everything feels, not perfect, but right and you question things that seemed fundamental to life before.
another velvet morning for me eh
I my opinion youve totally got it. Urban hymns came out when I was in my late teens and me and my mates used to get up to all kinds of stuff! It reminds me of going out on a mad one to a club and getting high. Then going back to a house of somebody who you know or a friend of a friend and then carrying on there. As the night comes to an end, the light starts creeping through the cracks in the curtains, the cones smoulder away, we all talk shite and suddenly youre very aware of how the loud the fridge sounds, this all makes sense. This songs really tugs at my heart strings about days gone by. Times I cant ever get back but the memories will be with me forever. Talking shit with people is fun and some bonds can only be created on a twiggy velvet morning like the one Ashcroft sings of in this song. Every line and sound in this song takes me back. another velvet for me also acrosstheuniverse eh! Nice one mate.
Some songs are beautiful just because they express ugly, tragic things so well. This is, unfortunately, the perfect song for me this weekend. As someone who deals with depression, I can tell you this is practically an x-ray of the depressed mindset (at least as I've experienced it)...particularly if you've just lost someone to cancer, which I did this week.
Somebody mentioned that they thought the part "my tongue is twisted, I'm more dead than alive" sounded like the side-effects of anti-depressants...could be, but some of us actually have trouble speaking when we're depressed enough, even if there's no medication involved...and feeling more dead than alive is more or less what a depressive episode is all about.
Ten years later, this song (whole album actually) is still amazing. I mostly agree with casemore's post, but here are my thoughts: "And now I'm trying to tell you about my life" = talking to a friend or possibly a therapist "And my tongue is twisted and more dead than alive" = the side-effects of anti-depressants "And my feelings they've always been betrayed and I was born a little damaged man and look what they made" = the depressed-person tendency to consider oneself a victim and also that the drugs and/or other treatment hasn't helped.
I don't think it's about a specific relationship, just general loneliness and hurt.
is it just me or does it sound more like "into the half life" and not half light. that would also make sense if hes dad went through radiotherapy.
I think it's about pride
i love this song, no comments yet wow
this is a great song, gee wiz
WOAH!
Great song, i've often wondered if there's any link to the velvet underground what with the title plus the fact that "more dead than alive" is a lyric from "I'm Waiting For The Men". I don't know whether this is just coincidence or if there are more references to the VU in the song.
To me this song is a combination of spiralling depression because of a relationship gone bad/not happened in the first place and there is now drug taking and the contemplation of suicide because he's tired of life and the kicks in the teeth that come with it.
