Saturn Return Lyrics
Harder to like yourself, harder to try
These Elvis poses, postcards and neopryn
Roses, a dollar a stern
Everyone's sleeping or pulling a long haul
The key's in the cooler, it's 3am
Is off on its own, is offering up
Telescope roof towards the northwestern sky
You pull the ladder up, no one's the wiser
You find your sights and discover
Is off on its own, is breaking from home
Easy to take off
You've seen and you've marked horizons
Mother was difficult, she made you cry
Cover the mirror, look to the sky
You climb into your rocketship triumph
Lift up and hold out your hands
Is off on its own, is breaking from home
Saturn is orbiting nothing
Is off on its own, is breaking from home
Saturn return when you chase down its moons
Throw them into a new gravity
Easy to poke yourself, easy as pie
Easy to take off, harder to fly, harder to wake Galileo

This is one of my favorite songs from REM. It's just amazing construction of lyric and sound.
I think it's about being alone because you're different than the rest of society, constantly looking at the stars (celebs) and the 'better people' and feeling inferior, to the point where self-destruction has taken place. I also think it can also mean that you've left the popular mentality behind, but are now seen as more of an outsider and strange, much like Galileo's ideas went against the teachings of the church.

This is one of my favourite songs, period - I enjoyed reading about the Saturn return so thanks for posting the link. I've always felt this song is about going through your struggles and strife as you age and the wonder and joy you feel at reaching a personal milestone and improving as a person - the lyrics imply a temporary self-removal from life and newfound perspective; recognising you've 'seen and marked horizons' and climbing into your 'rocketship triumph' but at the same time realising you've still got some way to go - 'easy to take off, harder to fly'. I particularly like the last minute of the song.
It also leads perfectly into Beat a Drum in terms of sound and lyrical content.

even though it's a fairly new one, i think this may be my favorite rem song. it's so unbelievably beautiful. at first, i heard it several times, only half listening, until finally looked down at the lines on my wrist and almost cried at how beautiful that part of the song is. our escape route to the stars lies within ourselves.

I'm with you there Render. This song gives me chills when I listen to it. It's so, well PERFECT. This and Monty got a Raw Deal are my two favorite R.E.M. songs.

i think its about leaving. and it puts the beautiful and sad parts of leaving into the most perfect perspective.

Yeah I think this is one of their best, most beautiful songs. I think it says self-destructive behaviors are easy compared to actually trying to look into yourself for answers. You can accept your wandering self (Saturn) or you can try to understand and bring sense to it (waking Galileo or flying there and reigning Saturn in). That's just the weird way I see the song. It's up there with Losing My Religion, Monty, and Nightswimming for my favorite by REM.

This song in actually beautifull ♥ I'v always imagened the line "you've seen and you've marked horizons" as an attempt of suicide..you know, slitting your wrists.. It's an awesome song, that I also see as being about hating yourself "harder to like yourself , harder to try"

Well, I found my new horizons and gravities and sights in nature; I recently had a dream where I was joyfully exploring each bird that came across my path, and this song was playing. When the song got to the line "Harder to wake Galileo", I was awakened by my alarm clock the very instant the line concluded. The kicker is that I had deliberately changed my sleep schedule and was waking up earlier to, yes, get outside earlier to catch the early birds!

come on more comments assholes! its one of michael's favorite!
lame-asses.
