In the chilly hours and minutes
Of uncertainty
I want to be
In the warm hold of your loving mind
To feel you all around me
And to take your hand
Along the sand
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
When sundown pales the sky
I want to hide a while
Behind your smile
And everywhere I'd look, your eyes I'd find
For me to love you now
Would be the sweetest thing
T'would make me sing
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
Diddy di dee dee diddy diddy
Diddy diddy diddy dee dee dee
When rain has hung the leaves with tears
I want you near to kill my fears
To help me to leave all my blues behind
For standin' in your heart
Is where I want to be
And long to be
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
Of uncertainty
I want to be
In the warm hold of your loving mind
To feel you all around me
And to take your hand
Along the sand
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
When sundown pales the sky
I want to hide a while
Behind your smile
And everywhere I'd look, your eyes I'd find
For me to love you now
Would be the sweetest thing
T'would make me sing
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
Diddy di dee dee diddy diddy
Diddy diddy diddy dee dee dee
When rain has hung the leaves with tears
I want you near to kill my fears
To help me to leave all my blues behind
For standin' in your heart
Is where I want to be
And long to be
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind

I hit rock bottom with this song and "The River" (the boss). Cried for hours-- it's about the longing. The intense love and wanting of that one special person...and not being able to have them...
didn't ask for a story
one of the best songs ever about unrequited love.
This song is so utterly sad. Reading the previous posts, to me it is more about a love lost rather than unrequited love - a love lost through a death of a partner maybe. The lyrics describe the emptiness and hurt of this all so well.
This song is great. I used it in a little video I did of my two daughters. I can feel this song being about trying to hold on to their youth for my own sake, and how years from now I will be missing we are emotionally now, while our whole worlds are just each other.
That's about the most tragic and sweet thing I've ever read on this site.
a beautiful song. so bloody sad though. love lost, love rejected, or quite possibly, love never realized by the woman.
Both versions of this song are incredible. The lyrics kill me. I always took it as a guy professing his love to a girl for the last time. Kinda saying, "Listen, I've told you a million times how much I love you. I'll describe it one last time. If you don't get it then I am finally gonna leave (catch the wind....and blow out of your life.)"
Dude... No.
"Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind" is a phrase designed to portray the futility of his hopes and dreams with regard to the object of his desires — presumably a girl.
He's just being poetic about the romance he's seeking, but he keeps reaching the same conclusion: "Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind". Catch the wind. The wind takes quite some catching, there, buddy. It's like saying, "Ah, but I may as well try and lose my shadow".
Back to the real world, in other words.
@Kurtin

It's unfortunate that your astute comments will be disregarded merely because you are perceived as a condescending cunt.
@Kurtin presumably a girl? no i think it was a cow
The version on greatest hits is far superior to the original and live is also great.
he wasnt trying to sound like Dylan. he was trying to sound like woody guthrie if anyone.
i love this song.
