Say goodbye on a night like this
If it's the last thing we ever do
You never looked as lost as this
Sometimes it doesn't even look like you
It goes dark
It goes darker still
Please stay
But I watch you like I'm made of stone
As you walk away

I'm coming to find you if it takes me all night
A witch hunt for another girl
For always and ever is always for you
Your trust, the most gorgeously stupid thing I ever cut in the world

Say hello on a day like today
Say it every time you move
The way that you look at me now
Makes me wish I was you
It goes deep
It goes deeper still
This touch
And the smile and the shake of your head
And the smile and the shake of your head

I'm coming to find you if it takes me all night
Can't stand here like this anymore
For always and ever is always for you
I want it to be perfect like before
Oh, I want to change it all
Oh, I want to change

I'm coming to find you if it takes me all night
Can't stand here like this anymore
For always and ever is always for you
I want it to be perfect like before
Oh, I want to change it all
Oh, I want to change
Oh, I want to change it all
Oh, I want to change

hmm why hasnt anyone written about this song? This is such a beautiful song, its about wanting someone who used to want you too.......... someone who's trust you've betrayed, but youd do anything to get them back with you, kind of similar feelings to boys dont cry i guess

"the most gorgeously stupid thing I ever cut in the world". That's it. Nothing more has to be said about break-up regret ever again!!

    My Interpretation

I think the song (in my personal opinion) is about trying to correct someone who you love (not necesary a girlfriend or boyfriend), because you know s/he has done bad things and that those actions will end your relationship with this person, when he says:

"I'm coming to find you if It takes me all night" he or she means that s/he will find a way to 'recover' or at least try to make the other person understands that what s/he is doing its totally wrong and bad.

I also think that when he says "The way you look at me,makes me wish I was you", it means that the person who is doing bad things somehow is suffering and that means you or the 'good' person wishes s/he was the one in pain.

The lines "It goes dark, it goes darker still" & "It goes deep, it goes deeper still" for me means the sadness and depression the 'good' person is feeling or going throught.

The end its about how s/he wants it to be "perfect" like it used to be time ago.

I can't actually figure out the part when Smith says "And the smile and the shake of your head" maybe the insanity or the evil living in the other person.

"You never looked as lost as this Sometimes it doesn't even look like you" means the way the 'bad' person changed and also the way s/he hides the evil feelings, that proves s/he used to be good time ago.

"Your trust The most gorgeously stupid thing I ever cut in the world" means that the love and trust each other had was maybe weird but still they protected/loved each other.

This is just my personal opinion about the song, since I listened to PMM that appears on Ginger Snaps soundtrack I also related it with both Brigitte and Ginger, the way Brigitte wanted to changer her sister when she turned 'evil', I'm not saying the song is inspired in the movie, but that was the easiest example I could find to show my interpertartion.

Of course this song is one of the greatest by The Cure. But don't forget to listen to the version on "The Cure in Orange", which is even better than the studio album, with a fabulous guitar solo instead of the sax part.

If you're lucky enough to possess the "Catch" 12" single from 1987, this live version is also on its B-side (and with a clearer mix than "Orange" !).

My favorite Cure song, and one of my favorite songs of all time in general. A beautiful expression of the transition between the denial of a loss and the moment where you realize it's final.

This song gives me shivers, it's so great. The live version on the Show album is even better than the studio version imo. You can hear the emotion in Robert's voice more. Aaah Robert Smith, thank you for making such beautiful music...

    My favorite part:

"I watch you like I'm made of stone As you walk away..."

Denying your feelings for someone, knowing that you feel something towards them.

annnnyway. this song. one of my favorites. im not sure what this song was written about. but it always reminds me of that conversation that ends most relationships. the 'do you still want to be with me' one.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
