Well, in my opinion this song is about being a young & maybe a little naive &/or introverted girl and finding yourself loving a man who is at first very charming, carefree & outgoing, and seems at first to be without limits, as in
"There was a time
you opened up every doorway
you didn't mind if everything
wasn't your way"
then that man starts to gradually become more introverted & shows their more possessive/obsessive side to you as the relationship progresses, even while they keep up the appearance of being carefree & outgoing to everyone else,
"Don't pull away
that goes against what you told me
I look in your eyes
I realize what you've sold me
is love in a vacuum"
so you confront them about the way they're acting and of course they deny it,
"I think you've changed
but you insist that
that's not true"
quite possibly they are an addict of some sort, my guess would be cocaine, &/or showing very obsessive behavior towards you (early on in the video for this song we see the man hanging a picture up, it is a very large portrait of Aimee & it is prominently displayed in his/their apartment for the duration of the song), thus their "love in a vacuum",
"You look so strange, so distant
that you're hardly you
Now I can see
how you have been acting different
You say it's me
but I know
that it isn't
it's love in a vacuum"
but still you are in love with them and don't want to leave them and you know that they are truly in love with you and they don't want you to leave them either, maybe they are convinced you can save them from themself, maybe they are so broken that the possibility of an overdose &/or suicide attempt is very real and you want to get through to them that their behavior not only dangerous but it is also just pissing you off and if they don't wise up they run the risk of loosing you, as in the lines
"You will be lonely
if you leave me alone", so you want to save them but can't get through to them due to the addiction &/or emotional problems they have,
"Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
love in a vacuum
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
You will be lonely
if you leave me alone
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough"
you want them to understand that the love they are giving you is not enough when it is filtered through the vacuum of their drug addiction &/or emotional impairment,
"You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough
and just wait
you will be lonely
Love in a vacuum
Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
Love in a vacuum".
'Love In A Vacuum' for me is a hauntingly truthful acute argument on the loneliness of obsession and almost inevitable loss of love that follows people who are broken in some way or another; the obsessives, the coke heads, the drunks, addicts or the just-plain-old emotionally broken; a razor sharp, lyrically driven, deceptively poppy, yet ultimately-depressing-in-the-best-way song.
Quintessential Aimee Mann.
You want to know why I hate you?
Well I'll try and explain.
You remember that day in Paris
When we wandered through the rain
And promised to each other
That we'd always think the same
And dreamed that dream
To be two souls as one
And stopped just as the sun set
And waited for the night
Outside a glittering building
Of glittering glass and burning light
And in the road before us
Stood a weary greyish man
Who held a child upon his back
A small boy by the hand
The three of them were dressed in rags
And thinner than the air
And all six eyes stared fixedly on you
The father's eyes said "Beautiful!
How beautiful you are!"
The boy's eyes said
"How beautiful!
She shimmers like a star!"
The childs eyes uttered nothing
But a mute and utter joy
And filled my heart with shame for us
At the way we are
I turned to look at you
To read my thoughts upon your face
And gazed so deep into your eyes
So beautiful and strange
Until you spoke
And showed me understanding is a dream
"I hate these people staring
Make them go away from me!"
The fathers eyes said "Beautiful!
How beautiful you are!"
The boys eyes said
"How beautiful! She glitters like a star!"
The child's eyes uttered joy
And stilled my heart with sadness
For the way we are
And this is why I hate you
And how I understand
That no one ever knows or loves another
Or loves another
Well I'll try and explain.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone).
And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
This is what the song was inspired by:
C. Baudelaire - Les Yeux des Pauvres
--> English translation
The Eyes of the Poor
Oh! You want to know why I hate you today. It will undoubtedly be less easy for you to understand than it will be for me to explain, for you are, I believe, the most beautiful example of feminine impermeability one could ever encounter.
We had spent together a long day that had seemed short to me. We had indeed promised that we would share all of our thoughts with one another, and that our two souls would henceforth be one -- a dream that isn't the least bit original, after all, if not that, dreamed of by all men, it has been realized by none.
In the evening, a bit tired, we wanted to sit down in front of a new café that formed the corner of a new boulevard, still strewn with debris and already gloriously displaying its unfinished splendors. The café was sparkling. The gaslight itself sent forth all the ardor of a debut and lit with all its force walls blinding in their whiteness, dazzling sheets of mirrors, the gold of the rods and cornices, chubby-cheeked page-boys being dragged by dogs on leashes, laughing ladies with falcons perched on their wrist, nymphs and goddesses carrying on their heads fruits, pies, and poultry, Hebes and Ganymedes presenting in out-stretched arms little amphoras filled with Bavarian cream or bi-colored obelisks of ice cream -- all of history and all of mythology at the service of gluttony.
Right in front of us, on the sidewalk, a worthy man in his forties was standing, with a tired face, a greying beard, and holding with one hand a little boy and carrying on the other arm a little being too weak to walk. He was playing the role of nanny and had taken his children out for a walk in the night air. All in rags. The three faces were extraordinarily serious, and the six eyes contemplated fixedly the new café with an equal admiration, but shaded differently according to their age.
The father's eyes said: "How beautiful it is! How beautiful it is! You'd think all the gold in this poor world was on its walls." -- The eyes of the little boy: "How beautiful it is! How beautiful it is! But it's a house only people who aren't like us can enter." -- As for the eyes of the smaller child, they were too fascinated to express anything other than a stupid and profound joy.
Song-writers say that pleasure makes the soul good and softens the heart. The song was right this evening, as regards me. Not only was I moved by this family of eyes, but I also felt a little ashamed of our glasses and our carafes, which were larger than our thirst. I turned my gaze toward your's, dear love, to read my thoughts there; I plunged into your so beautiful and so bizarrely gentle eyes, into your green eyes, inhabited by Caprice and inspired by the Moon, and then you said to me: "I can't stand those people over there, with their eyes wide open like carriage gates! Can't you tell the head-waiter to send them away?"
So difficult is it to understand one another, my dear angel, and so incommunicable is thought, even between people in love!
Well, after the entire story, what can I say, but I'll try anyway and agree with what most have said. This is an amazing song. The Cure were brilliant.

The singer is disillusioned about his lover because he believed that if you're soul mates they'll always know and understand each other perfectly. Sort of like some psychic connection and the other person will understand and fill your needs perfectly. Thinking you'll always think and feel the same by some mystical romantic force.

It turns while he thinks the beggars are admiring her like a brilliant star, she is disgusted by them and wants them to go away. Their thoughts are completely different which shatters the illusion of "soul mates" he had. He also finds her thoughts are actually rather ugly and maybe she's not a beautiful person after all.

The last lines "no one ever knows or loves another" are a bit harsh, but points out that the idea of a psychic love connection is garbage. You can never really know exactly what someone else is thinking or how they see things even if you think you do. If you're counting on "soul mates" that always understand and love one another perfectly then you're in for a bad surprise over and over again. A simple view of love with "soul mates" is infantile and dumb.

My personal take is that yes, you can love someone else, but they'll always think differently than you. You'll never truly understand them 100% of the time. If you agree on many of the important things, can accept the differences, can help each other, and communicate a lot you might have a chance. The soul mates thing is easy to fall into and believe when first falling in love, but it will wear off sometime. After it wears off then your relationship will be in trouble if that's all you've got.
Ha ha, "feminine impermeability." I love it.
I think Smith must've been into French lit when he was in school.
@MeurtreScene I find it interesting that in the Baudelaire version they were at a restaurant (the sort where one would might expect a Monty Python skit to occur; perhaps for dessert they had "wefeh-seen meents"), looking outside the window at the poor family, while the couple is also outside in the song. Also, it's the fancy restaurant that has the poor family impressed, rather than the girl. In both cases, the girl's cruel response horrifies the narrator, as well as shocking him because he thought she would feel just as he did.

To quote the Pet Shop Boys (though admittedly they blatantly intended this as sarcasm): "Love is a bourgeois construct, just like they said at university." <g>
I see this song as a cynical retort against the idea of soulmates. When people think they've found their soulmate they conjure up this wild fantasy idea that they are two souls as one, the same mind in two different bodies, then once an incident occurs which reveals they think completely differently about something, have a wild disagreement, that fantasy is immediately shattered and exposed to the reality of it all, their love turns to hatred as they realize they aren't actually much like one another at all.
This song is one of my favorites because I myself am pretty cynical about the idea of soulmates. I personally feel it's a lot more romantic to connect with someone who's different to you in certain ways, so that even though you may disagree on various things you still respect one another's views and love one another for who you are. The 'two souls as one' idea to me sounds naive and vain, and that is pretty much exposed in this song.
Definitely.

The only thing I can add is that the reason she reacts badly is not necessarily because she's shallow, but because of the way these strangers view her as an object of desire.

This also fits well with Smith's deep influence from existentialist thinking (e.g, "Killing An Arab" => Camus' "The Stranger"). I'm sure he read Sartre's "Being and Nothingness"; many of his songs deal with the problem of The Other.
Taken from "Les Yeux Des Pauvres", a short novel by Baudelaire, a song about the dualism of ideas and reality. Simple as that, huh?
I agree. Smith looks at these people and sees the beauty in them. His girlfriend sees beggers. He sees the uglyness of her soul and recoils in her uglyness.. Pretty simple.
dualism of what ideas explain more?
The moment in time when the shades are raised and you realize the person you are with does not value the world the way you do; in fact you find their view disgusting.
Beauty is only skin deep! The girl - pretty on the outside, was very ugly on the inside, and this is why I hate you...
Uhm, the synth line at the beginning sounds a lot like Decades by Joy Division. -jess
MaskOfSanity you are 100% spot on! When we meet the so-called "perfect" person, we do conjure up "perfection" fantasies because we are all to naive to know any different.
In this song the illusion is shattered when he sees how his loved one views the people, she sees them as beggars (Make them go away from me) which makes our protaganist jump out of the "soul mate" idea because he sees her for what she really is, and his illusions of soulmates or whatever are completely shattered (and this is why I hate you)
Fucking amazing Cure song, one of the best on the Kiss Me... album.
markofsanity, I agree 100%. The idea of a soulmate who will share all your views seems great but it will inevitibly become Dull and loose its luster. Living your life through views other than your own is much, much more intriguing. You subconciously say to yourself wow, I would have never seen it that way. Or, if your other partner is wild and your timid the timid gets to see life through the eyes of the wild...etc...basically, the differences complete each other.
