So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

The way this song speaks to me🥺🥺when I sing it I feel like I relate
I think this song it pretty much about being in a sick relationship, not for a partner fault but simply for his/her way of being. It kinda express a feeling like "for a long time I was in love with you and I wasn't able to say no, it's not your fault it's ok, it's just that I can't live like this anymore". The "I'm just your long time curse" means (in my opinion, of course) that you really understand that your parner doesen't love you, he/her is just obsessed by you in a certain way, but this has nothing to do with affection.

This one's written from the perspective of Mary Magdalene, who's upset that Jesus "broke up" with her. Either that or taking crystal meth. Knowing these guys, probably both.

It seems to me like that somewhere between "Hey honey what you trying to say / As I stand here / Don't you walk away" and "But that's the way that you are / And that's the things that you say" some parts are quotation? Like stuff she tells him? Kinda like emotional games and always going on and off? And he believes this time is the last time, that she's gone too far with such talking, that she never comes back and he's sick of her behaviour anyway, when truth is that she has him wrapped around her finger and thus he will always fall for her as soon as she longs for him because he's obsessed and in love with her? Maybe I'm far off. Just a thought.
