So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

Written mostly by Lennon, this song was intended as a follow up to the success of "She Loves You," and the yeah yeah yeah chorus. Lennon wrote this as a echo of his own life, being lonely, waiting for the girl to return that walked out on him, to come back and make him happy again. It seems that many of Lennon's songs that dealt with broken relationships were not necessarily fueled by romances that didn't work out. In this youth he felt lonely and dejected. His father left him as a child, and in effect, he was dejected again when his mother turned him over to her sister, John's Aunt Mimi to raise him. Then, in 1958, his mother was killed when she was struck by an automobile. Lennon thought and rightfully so, that he lost his mother twice. It was recorded on July 30, 1963.

This song was most definitely NOT written by Paul... It is clearly John singing lead vocal, and the lyrics have all the John trademark themes of abandonment, rejection and self-pity that were prevailant in his contributions to the Beatles first few albums.
To me, it doesn't matter who wrote it, I still like it. I fell in love with it when I heard it on the anthology movie, and the video they put with it is just so fun! It shows the beatles out doing crazy things and the like, its their true essence, when they weren't jaded by fame and the business of it all. Just a bunch of lads having fun...
I always thought this song captured the pure energy of the Beatles. Possibly better than most of their hits (right up there with She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand at least). If you've never heard this song check it out.

I love the responsive "Yeaa!" after jonh's it's so crackeddy cool
I love this song for a few reasons... A lot of bands during that time had one vocalist and that was pretty much it. All of the Beatles got to sing lead vocals, and the others always provided great backing vocals. The yeah yeah in this song are a great example of that. That also makes the song kind of similar to "She Loves You." But my other reasons... Well, it's just an awesome, feel-good song!
And this is a John song, but I bet Paul contributed too.
I really like the version from Across the Universe of this. Sung by Evan Rachel Wood. That movie has a lot of connections to the Beatles, like were everybody is singing "All You Need Is Love" on a rooftop, like the Beatles did for their last concert. Trippy movie.
