its amazing how far music can come.. 24 years after it released and its one of the most heartfelt songs ive heard
The time has come to reach a new realization 'tween me and you
Time to clear the rumors sensations and things that just are untrue.
Well I thought I heard you behind me
With a knife straight for my back.
It's quite clear that I'm back in the swing of living
Although I might not be on the right track.
Oh thought I might drown but its hard to be givin'.
Downtown's where's you'll find me do some and got a hand.
Although I never listen girl, I damn well understand.
And you think, I'm so damn feeble.
I can't see through your lies, you're just a crock of shit,
With a pretty smile, and I refuse to compromise.
Oh, don't give me such a heavy, heavy, heavy load
You may hold some vision of truth, if truth can found in a lie.
Maybe some grain of inspiration, for song that's deep inside.
Oh, tears running down your face,
Just screaming look me in the eye.
Well I'm licking straight at your twisted face,
And it's enough to make me cry.
Oh, I payed the price of loving you,
In more ways than one.
Wrapped around your finger but I think my time has come,
But I never can be too sure 'cause I like to have a little fun.
Oh, what fun it would be to blow my mind and fall into the sun.
A mind is a precious thing to taste.
Time to clear the rumors sensations and things that just are untrue.
Well I thought I heard you behind me
With a knife straight for my back.
It's quite clear that I'm back in the swing of living
Although I might not be on the right track.
Oh thought I might drown but its hard to be givin'.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
to me it looks like this song is about this girl who's jerkin him around but he takes it because shes beautiful and a kiler lay. But then he gets a new realization and decides to break it off, stop takin the bullshit. it doesnt work though, in the end he thinks with the head in his pants, not the one on his shoulders.
@eigth nailed that shit. "Passion's there for those who want to pay the price of loving you" so dope "I never can be too sure cuz I like to have a little fun" He can't give it up
I wonder if it's the same bitch that torments him.. all the songs he writes
it's about being fucking backstabbed by somebody you pour your heart out to but all that person cares about is her/himself. It's about realizing that you've only been playing yourself and you have to get over this person because she/he is just driving you emotionally crazy.
To me it seems like looking back on your past and knowing that your future is most likely gonna be the same old shit. Deffinatly one of my favorite songs. favorite line'You may hold some vision of truth, if truth can found in a lie.' and i love how brad says lie at the end :)
perfect song. great f-u song. although, i thought the part he says, "down-town is where you'll find me, through some ill-guided hand." meaning he shouldn't be getting fucked up but he is because he has to get you off his mind. even if it's not i'll still sing it that way. :P peace.
I thought I might drown, but it's hard TO KEEP a good man down
I LOVE this song sssssssssssssssssssssoooooooooooo incredibly much!
you are right eight!
IN fuckin CREDIBLE. If this was a single, i think it would top the charts cuz its so unique and so fuckin dope.
"you think i'm so damn feeble, i *can [not can't]see through your lies"
