Close My Eyes Lyrics
With the weight of the world
That I held deep inside
Life was a winding road
And I learned many things
Little ones shouldn't know
Steadied my feet on the ground
Raised my head to the sky
And though time's rolled by
Still feel like that child
As I look at the monn
Maybe I grew up
A little too soon
To grow numb to the madness
And block it away
I left the worst unsaid
Let it all dissipate
And I try to forget
Steadied my feet on the ground
Raised my head to the sky
And though time's rolled by
Still feel like that child
As I look at the monn
Maybe I grew up
A little too soon
Obvious I almost
Fell right over A part of me
Will never be quite able
To feel stable
That woman-child falling inside
Was on the verge of fading
Thankfully I
Woke up in time
Sail away on an ocean
With you by my side
Orange clouds roll by
They burn into your image
And you're still alive
(You're always alive)
Steadied my feet on the ground
Raise my head to the sky
And though time's rolls by
Still feel like that child
As I look at the monn
Maybe I grew up
A little too soon

This song is definately about Mariah's childhood and her constant struggle to find who she was. It explained her strength through growing up, making mistakes, and surviving all of her struggles.

I looooooooooove this song. I've had her album "musicbox" forever and it's defintely better than the stuff she has come out with recently. I agree with the above comment that the song is about her trying to figure out who she was.
I especially love this particular part of the song:
Funny how one can learn To grow numb to the madness And block it away I left the worst unsaid Let it all dissipate And I try to forget
I know EXACTLY what she means because I always try to block and forget all the bad things that happen to me.

Tho she refers to herself and the fact she feels she is the same person she was when she was a child...This song is actually more about the escape from her abusive relationship with Tommy, and she says it has helped many women from abusive relationships. She wrote this song in the bathtub, useless but interesting factoid for you mariah fans!

Actually, Carey has said on several different occasions that the songwriting process for this particular piece took her several years and that it was in fact therapeutic as far as relieving many dark parts of her life up until that point. This song really had nothing to do with Tommy, but when Carey composes these types of pieces she always says that it's up for interpretation; this does not mean it dictates the experiences she drew upon when writing. That being said, this and "Petals" are my two favorite songs by her. I wish she would write more lyrically deep pieces such as these.
