So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
God save the sex pistols they're a bunch of wholesome blokes
They just like wearing filthy clothes and swapping filthy jokes
God save television keep the programms pure
God save William Grundy from falling in manure
Ronnie Biggs was doing time until he done a bunk
Now he says he's seen the light and he sold his soul to punk
God save Martin Boorman and nazis on the run
They wasn't being wicked God that was their idea of fun
God save Myra Hindley God save Ian Brady
Even though he's horrible and she ain't what you call a lady
Ronnie Biggs was doing time until he done a bunk
Now he says he's seen the light and he sold his soul to punk
Ronnie Biggs was doing time until he done a bunk
Now he says he's seen the light and he sold his soul to punk
God save politicians God save our friends the pigs
God save Idi Amin and god save Ronald Biggs
God save all us sinners God save your blackest sheep
God save the good samaritan and god save the worthless creep
Ronnie Biggs was doing time until he done a bunk
Now he says he's seen the light and he sold his soul to punk
Ronnie Biggs was doing time until he done a bunk
Now he says he's seen the light and he sold his soul to punk
Sold his soul Sold his soul Sold his soul to punk
They just like wearing filthy clothes and swapping filthy jokes
God save television keep the programms pure
God save William Grundy from falling in manure

Now he says he's seen the light and he sold his soul to punk
God save Martin Boorman and nazis on the run

Even though he's horrible and she ain't what you call a lady
Ronnie Biggs was doing time until he done a bunk

Ronnie Biggs was doing time until he done a bunk
Now he says he's seen the light and he sold his soul to punk
Sold his soul Sold his soul Sold his soul to punk

no one is innocent
I think this is a sarcastic take-off on the 'God save the Queen' phrase, basically adding 'god save' before the names of several [nasty] people. William Grundy = sleazy brit TV host who Johnny and Steve swore at on TV Ronnie Biggs = The only participant in the Great Train Robbery in the 1960's to get away with the cash, settled in Brazil [where the Brits couldn't touch him] and sang vocals on this song! Martin Boorman = Nazi who gave order to exterminate the Jews Myra Hindley and Ian Brady = the moores murderers. A couple, who were serial killers. Politicians and Pigs [cops] = let's face it, they beloing on a list with nazis and killers... Idi Armin = Ugandan military leader who excecuted most of his army and expelled most of the non-black population [ie, like a black ethnic cleansing][don't know a lot about him, just googled it]
@Nexus7 just a tiny correction, Ronnie Biggs was not the only one in the robbery who got away with his money (read about Buster Edwards for example, also an interesting story :)<br /> and by the way Ronnie Biggs not only sung the song, AFAIK he also wrote the lyrics :)
worships
i love the pistols but i always skip this song, i don't like the guy who sings
I think it's a crap song. Steve and Paul buggered off to Brazil to record it with Ronnie Biggs. Why should Ronnie Biggs be patronised when he took part in a train robbery that left the driver brain-dead. It's sick.
you realise by sayin this whatername1251 that this makes the sex pistols even better this song even better theyre unstoppable even though theyre split the legend an effects of the pistols shall live ferever in hitor-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
I think you need to get some lessons in English Mycrustyscabs.
William Grundy got drunk before interviewing the sex pistols and came on to singer from Siouxie and the Banshees.
this song is the perfect piss take ;]
