Looking In Lyrics

You look at me and see the girl
Who lives inside the golden world
But don't believe
That's all there is to see
You'll never know the real me

She smiles through a thousand tears
And harbours adolescent fears
She dreams of all
That she can never be
She wades in insecurity
And hides herself inside of me

Don't say she takes it all for granted
I'm well aware of all I have
Don't think that I am disenchanted
Please understand

It seems as though I've always been

Somebody outside looking in
Well, here I am for all of them to bleed
But they can't take my heart from me
And they can't bring me to my knees
They'll never know the real me

I love this song. It's kind of the way I feel about myself sometimes. It's like, 'don't judge me until you know the real me'. Mariah is great. If you didn't know, this song is the very last one on her "Daydream" album.

This is also one of the best songs Mariah has ever written. People hate her that don't know anything about her. In the end, there's no way to make anyone understand who you really are.

i can relate to this song. god is the only person who sees the real you. no one else can because they can't see your heart.

This song portrays an insecure girl who thinks the world sees her as something she's not. I can relate to this song, I feel people just look at me and automatically judge me as something I'm really not either. It's hard being a teenager, you always feel so insecure.

Elaborating from miss opinion's piece, it's not only teenagers that are judged. It happens everywhere. I'll walk into work, or I'll walk into a class, and I feel like people are looking at me, judging me right away instead of making an attempt to know me. But it is hard being a teenager, and having to live with the fact that people judge you all the time. Such words as "whore, faggot, nerd" etc, come to mind. Having been fortunate enough to not have suffered that much criticism in my life, I'm grateful for music like this song to appease my fears.

this was my anthem all through high school. I even had it in the clear cover of my binder. As if I didn't get weird looks before...

Mariah has originally written this song talking about her former marriage with Tommy Motolla, who was a control freak over Mariah's life. At that time, she was one of the biggest stars in music and she was known everywhere around the world, her album was selling damn good... everything a superstar could possibly want. She's thankful for that by in the end, she knows that all these things won't bring her peace of mind, something still is missing. Fame and sucess can't erase your past scars.

Mariah and Tommy was still married back then. The song is from 1995 and they got separated officially in 1997. I don't think Mariah would have written that song, if it was about Tommy, when they were still together. I do believe the song is about people seeing her in that "perfect" way of being Americas sweetheart, a good girl, but people not knowing about the struggles and personal scars from her childhood.
