Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
I remember this song quite vividly from my young adulthood. I remember my mother, older sister and I were driving around town and this song came on the radio. I started to sing it and my mother started to cry. She said that the song was about abortion and suicide and that I was too young to sing a song like it. I never quite understood all the words, untill now. I wonder if this song was inspired by true events that took place in the authors life or his personal opinions on abortion...
this is a song about a girl who was raped and the sorrow and guilt that was untold to her. she's thinking about having an abortion but can't come to grips of going through with it because of the repsonsibilities of life.

okay, now as the meaning for the song, which was originally by the verve pipe:
writer's girlfriend gets pregnant, and he has her abort the baby, so they won't have to get married. they're both guilty about it. then, the writer goes away to get away from everything, and while he's gone, his girlfriend commits suicide.
part of this is actually true.. well, the abortion part is. however, the girl didn't really kill herself.

Brian Vander Ark (the singer/song writer) said that the song was about his relationship at a young age with his very serious at the time girlfriend who became pregnant. Instead of getting married they opted for an abortion, and the song talks about dealing with that pain. HE STATES THAT THE GIRLS SUICIDE WAS POETIC LICENSE for the song, but that the relationship and abortion were real. The name of the song actually comes from a reference to their youth, as well as having been the name of a movie (w/ Marlon Brando) that he had watched the night before. He claims after writing the lyrics "I realised we were all kinda freshmen."
Brian goes on to conclude the post saying that the song has a life of its own, and it is important that it means whatever it has to for whoever needs it. The above meaning being only his as the writer, not the total summation of the song.
