Outside Lyrics
Inherently it's just always been strange
Neither here or there
Always somewhat out of place everywhere
Ambiguous
Without a sense of belonging to touch
Somewhere halfway
Feeling there's no one completely the same
Eager to just
Believe it's good enough to be what
You really are
But in your heart
Uncertainty forever lies
And you'll always be
Somewhere on the
Outside
The realization you don't
have a space
Where you fit in
And recognize you
Were born to exist
Eager to just
Believe it's good enough to be what
You really are
But in your heart
Uncertainty forever lies
And you'll always be
Somewhere on the
Outside
And it's hard
And it's hard
Falling in between
And it's hard
And it's hard
To be understood
As you are
As you are
Oh, and God knows
That you're standing on your own
Blind and unguided
Into a world divided
You're thrown
Where you're never quite the same
Although you try-try and try
To tell yourself
You really are
But in your heart-uncertainty forever lies
And you'll always be
Somewhere on the outside

This song is amazing! Its quite self explanitory, never feeling like you really fit into the world u are in! This is one of Mariahs best songs, really expressive and amazing! Everybody can relate to it!

best song written by mariah carey!

I agree with pinklinkin that this is her best song. This song is so sad it always makes me cry because when I first heard it I had just moved for the 4th time since I had started high school and I just felt alone and out of place. I have felt like this my whole life and I am so grateful that she wrote this song.
I think this song is about her growing up biracial and always feeling like she had no one to relate to.

This song has a personal meaning for me. I'm biracial. Growing up I was always told I was lucky to have two cultures (Black American/White British), so I had more people to relate too. However, in reality I felt more alone. I don't have people who share the same common background. I'm not white, but I'm also not black. I'm always 'other' in ethnic background field.
When I listen to this song I feel like there's someone else who understands what I've been through.

i love the Butterfly album because it has many good songs in it, but this song really got to me. when i was feeling depressed a while ago, i even cried listening to this song.
i know for mariah, the song is actually about being biracial. but for me it's also applicable to sexuality. a while ago i really couldnt accept the fact that i'm gay and i hated myself. only recently i've embraced it and is just living with the fact that i wont change.
everything she sang there is really the things i felt. like "standing on my own", "in a world divided", "tried to tell myself that i was quite the same", "in my heart uncertainty forever lies", "always felt i was outside"......so sad to think about it.
