Please, mother mercy
Take me from this place
And the long-winded curses
I hear in my head

The words never listen
And teachers, oh they never learn
My warmth from the candle
Though I feel too cold to burn

He came from an island
Then he died from the street
And he hurt so bad like a soul breakin'
But he never said nothin' to me, yeah

A'say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven
Say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven, yeah

New like a baby, lost like a prayer
The sky was your playground
But the cold girl was your bed

Ooh, I said, poor Stargazer
She's got no tears in her eyes
But fool like a whisper
She knows that love heals all wounds with time

Now it seem like too much love is
Never enough, yeah, you better
Seek out another road 'cause this one has ended abrupt, oh

Say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven
Say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven, yeah

Say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven, oh oh
(Heaven)
(Heaven)
(Heaven)

I, I never wanted
To write these words down for you
With the pages of phrases
Of things we'll never do

Yea, so I blow out, out the candle and I put you to bed
Since you can't say to me now
How the dog broke your bone
There's just one thing left to be said

Say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven
Say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven
Say hello to heaven, heaven, heaven, yeah
Say hello to heaven, to heaven, yeah yeah oh oh

    Song Meaning

I think this song has some references to Mother Love Bone songs, for explample:

"Poor stargazer She's got no tears in her eyes"

    • It's a clear reference to "Stargazer" song

"Words never listen And TEACHERS NEVER LEARN"

    • This part, I think is a reference to "Chloe Dancer" song: "A couple of years difference BUT THOSE LESSONS NEVER LEARN (did you know)"

So, Does anyone know any other reference in this song? (my english is pretty bad, and it's difficult find them for myself)

the remaining members of Mother Love Bone, after losing their lead singer (Andrew Wood i think his name was) collaberated with some members of Soundgarden and pulled Eddie Vedder out of nowhere to do backup vocals for a one-time project tribute to Wood

This is just a beautiful tribute to Andrew Wood who was the lead singer for Mother Love Bone. The Other members were (Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament from Pj) and Greg Gilmore, and last Bruce Fairweather. I Just love the lyrics to this song, its sort of touching in a way.

although not about Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, this song could almost be about him after his passing in 2002. Its a sad, yet comforting song dedicated to Andrew Wood, but can be for anyone really.

    This song is amazing.

The entire album is the epitome of all good, scratch that, great 90's music. That being said, it is still timeless...

this song is truely amazing. chris is my most favorite artist, singer, songwriter in the entire world. with that being said...heres my story. my mother was in the hospital dying and we got the call to come coz she was slipping fast. we were on our way there and i had this intense feeling that i was choking..i felt like i couldnt breathe. i pressed the cd button on the car stereo and played say hello to heaven. it was so right for the moment and so emotional...we were too late getting there by like 5-10 minutes and i grabbed her hand nd told her to say hello to heaven. i believe that while that song was playing and i had the feeling like i couldnt breathe was when she passed. so sadly such a awesome song is forever linked with me to such a hard time.

This is about Andrew Wood, singer of Mother Love Bone, who died of a drug overdose in 1990. He was a friend of Chris Cornell's and the whole Temple of the Dog album is basically a big tribute to him. This is probably one of the more obvious songs that is dedicated to Wood,.

I recommend the album, it has a little bit of every 90s feel on it

This is an amazing song. A beautiful dedication to a lost brother... My boyfriend turned me on to Temple of the Dog and Mother Love Bone. Now I enjoy the music probably more than him. We lose all the greats early.

I can't even begin to express how great this is to me. Best TOTD song imo. 1991 was the year for Chris. This, Jesus Christ Pose, and Slaves & Bulldozers are among his greatest vocal preformances. Great lyrics too. Good song to listen to after losing someone dear to you. Again, I can't even begin...
