We Belong
Martina Mcbride and Pat Benatar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Many times I tried to tell you
Many times I cried alone
Always I'm surprised how well you cut my feelings to the bone
Don't want to leave you really
I've invested too much time to give you up that easy
To the doubts that complicate your mind

We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words we've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace for worse or for better
We belong, we belong, we belong together

Maybe it's a sign of weakness when I don't know what to say
Maybe I just wouldn't know what to do with my strength anyway
Have we become a habit? Do we distort the facts?
Now there's no looking forward
Now there's no turning back
When you say

We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words we've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace for worse or for better
We belong, we belong, we belong together

Close your eyes and try to sleep now
Close your eyes and try to dream
Clear your mind and do your best to try and wash the palette clean
We can't begin to know it, how much we really care
I hear your voice inside me, I see your face everywhere
Still you say

We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words we've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace for worse or for better
We belong, we belong, we belong together

We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words we've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace for worse or for better

We belong, we belong, we belong together
We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder

Overall Meaning

The song "We Belong" by Martina McBride and Pat Benatar is a powerful ballad that delves into the ups and downs of a committed and emotional relationship. The song's lyrics describe the singer's attempts to communicate with her partner and express her deepest emotions, while also acknowledging the complications and doubts that can arise in a long-term relationship.

The lyrics begin with the singer admitting that she has tried many times to tell her partner how she feels, but has often cried alone with her emotions. While she is invested in the relationship and does not want to leave, she acknowledges the doubts and complications that can cloud the mind. However, the chorus of the song asserts that the couple belongs together, despite any hardships or disagreements they may face.

As the song continues, the singer wonders if her inability to express herself fully is a sign of weakness, or if she simply doesn't know how to harness her own strength. She also questions whether or not the couple has become too comfortable in their relationship, and whether they may be distorting the truth to fit their own version of reality. Despite these concerns, however, the singer's voice is still filled with a sense of longing and affection, and she readily proclaims that the couple belongs together.

Anyone else here because you just watched them singing Independence Day together, then prayed for THIS? Can't be just me. Angels singing together. Perfection!

I had the pleasure of spending 4 days on a train across Canada with the author, Gretchen Peters. These ladies even topped her performance! I believe she would have been proud!

I was hoping, because I did hear Independence Day . This was amazing, I never heard Pat’s husband sing . He’s quite good, he adds the depth . It was awesome to hear Martina sing it , she’d so good, and did justice to Pat’s music . I’m a child of the 80’s and 90’s , so hearing Pat Benetar was a treat . I was a teenager when she was popular.
