recover
Natasha Bedingfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Been torn apart,
Got so many scratches and scars,
Maybe they wont all go away,
But they'll fade,
Maybe time can mend us together.. again.
Its not what we've done but, how far we've come.

We will recover
The worst is over, now.
All those fires we've been walking through,
And still we survive, somehow.
We will recover
The worst is behind
And it hurts, but in time, I know that we will recover.
(Yeah yeah)

Got so much to lose,
Seems I've lost my power to choose, oh
What to love and when to let go,
That all changed,
Get bitten once and then your afraid
What a waste,
Look what we've done,
How far we've come..

We will recover,
The worst is over, now.
All those fires we've been walking through,
And still we survive, somehow.
We will recover,
The worst is behind,
And it hurts, but in time, I know that we will recover.
Everybody's gotta, a reason to cry,
And everybody fights but, not everyone survives
And everybody's searching, not everybody finds
And I'm still in recovery, and I'll make it alive?

We will recover,
The worst is over, now.
All those fires we've been walking through
And still we survive, somehow.

We will recover
The worst is behind, and it hurts but in time,
I know that we will recover,
The worst is over, now.
And all those fires we've been walking through,
And still we survive, somehow.
We will recover,

The worst is behind
And it hurts, but in time, I know that we will recover

Overall Meaning

Natasha Bedingfield's song "Recover" is a powerful anthem of resilience, strength and hope after overcoming life's obstacles that leave us scarred and changed. The opening verse speaks of being torn apart and the scars that we collect through our experiences. It acknowledges that while some of these marks may fade, they may not disappear altogether. However, it is through the passage of time that we have the strength and ability to mend together again. The chorus provides a sense of relief, the assurance that the worst is now over, and we will recover. The last verse poignantly notes that everyone has a reason to cry, loses something of value and fights to survive. But not everyone makes it, and not everyone finds what they are looking for. She, herself, is still in recovery, reminding us that it is a journey, a process, and one that takes time.

The song speaks to the resilience of the human spirit to endure and to overcome. It highlights the importance of acknowledging one's pain, working through it and finding the courage to move forward. The repeating melodies in the chorus, with the phrase "we will recover" gives the listener a sense of hope and reassurance that it is possible to come out stronger from lived experiences of pain.

I remember when this song dropped over a decade ago and as a now 36 year old female who as of today 9/19/23, hit 20 years of having a severe eating disorder and a life completely flipped sideways due to it, this song always gives me just a few minutes of quiet from the ED voices and 20 years of pain and regrets.

To those struggling, with whatever you’re struggling with, I see you, I hear you, I am you. To those recovered and fighting daily to maintain their recovery, I’m so very proud of you and your journey to where you are, your fight, your strength and your drive.

To those with loved ones (friends, family etc) struggling with addiction OR recovery; support them, talk to them, or be silent WITH them. I’ve been on my own my 20 years or addiction with no support and I’d give anything to have had someone check in, show up, be there, stick through the bad and good etc.

To everyone else who’s never struggled or known someone who’s struggled/struggling. Be grateful for that, it’s not something I wish upon anyone.

@ChastityChained

This is 1 song that is a testimony to my life. I've seen A LOT of negativity in my 29 years, but I made it through everything, but not without pieces of my spirit being removed and replaced with nothing at all or remnants of scar tissue. I will never let those negative things define me, but I always have to keep my mind at ease to keep positivity flowing through my life now.

@AltoonaYourPiano

Everything this woman sings is a work of art
