A self-taught musician, Macdonald began by playing her father's guitar after being inspired by Travis at the T in the Park Festival in 2000, where she heard Travis' song "Turn" and wanted to play it herself. She started performing in pubs and coffee houses around Glasgow at the age of 15. She signed a record deal with Vertigo, the same record label which hosts The Killers and Razorlight. Her first single, Poison Prince, was released on May 7, 2007. Her debut album, This Is the Life, was released on July 30, 2007. "Don't Tell Me That It's Over" was released in March 2010 as the lead single from her second studio album, A Curious Thing, which was released on 8 March 2010.
Macdonald's third album, Life in a Beautiful Light, was released on June 11, 2012. The lead single, Slow It Down, is about her being a petrol head.
Wish for Something More

For it to still be night
Oh the air feels so cold, so cold and old
How can it be light?
Let's take a walk outside
See the world through teach others eyes
I wish I was your only one
I think you're beautiful but your hair is a mess
And your shoes are untied but that's what I love best
And I, I wish I was the one, your one and only sun and you looked at me that way
I wish for long lingering glances
Fairy tale romances every single day
And you look at me and say I'm your best friend every day
But I wish for something, wish for something more
Oh I love you like a friend, but lets not pretend how I wish for something, wish for something more
Now the grass is so green, but I can't see anything past your eyes
I'm fixated on your smile
"A Wish For Something More" is a song about longing for something deeper and more meaningful in a relationship. Amy Macdonald sings about being content with being friends with someone, while also wishing for something more romantic and intimate. The opening lines of the song set the stage for her conflicting feelings; the sun shining bright suggests that it's morning and a new day has begun, yet the air feels cold and old, indicating that something isn't quite right.
She suggests going for a walk outside and seeing the world through each other's eyes, implying that there's more to be discovered between them. Macdonald's wish for something more also involves romantic clichés like longing gazes and fairy tale romances. She's drawn to this person because of their imperfections, expressing her love for them despite their messy hair or untied shoelaces. Although she loves this person deeply as a friend, she can't help but desire a deeper connection with them.
