Toronto 2014
Daniel Caesar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes it feels like it's a dream
Everything is not as it seems
If only I could find a pair of glasses
To help me see the ones that who truly be
They live, and we sleep
Pray my days will never hit one
Take me far away from the sun
If only I could find my way through space-time
Back to when I was happy being me
They live and we-

I can hear the bells ringing, reminding us why
We're still here singing, it's Father Time
Stuck in the matrix
Living a lie
I'm not afraid to die

Take me back to 2014
Saw a pic this morning
Far along the journey
The future was alluring
On the other side of TVs
Hoping that they see me
But they already see me
At least, that's how I see things
Isn't it funny how the time flies?
Like a G5 jet in the turbulence
But we gon' make it home tonight, alright, alright
Alright, alright
My misery is boring
Finally feel confident
Yes, that's an accomplishment
Many more commas to get

I can hear the bells ringing, reminding us why
We're still here singing, it's Father Time
Were stuck in the matrix
Living a lie
I'm not afraid to die

You know it's Stockholm, long road, London, you can't even reach me
Just know whenever you need me, we'll figure it out
Look up, and you'll see me, and I'll be around
'Cause when I'm home, I'm lost, let's go
Make it look easy

Oh, take it easy on me
It's still my city, it's still my city

Overall Meaning

In Daniel Caesar's song "Toronto 2014," the artist reflects on the idea of reality versus perception. He acknowledges that life can sometimes feel like a dream, and everything is not always as it seems. He wishes he had some sort of clarity, a pair of glasses, to help him see the people around him for who they truly are. Caesar also touches on the idea of living in the matrix, where everything feels artificial, and people are living a lie. Despite this, he's not afraid to die.

The song takes a nostalgic turn as Caesar takes us back to 2014, a time where the future felt promising and alluring. He remembers hoping that people would see him, but at the same time recognizing that they already see him for who he is. The artist acknowledges that time flies, and life moves quickly like a G5 jet in turbulence. However, Caesar remains optimistic, and despite his past misery, he finally feels confident, and there are many more accomplishments to be made.

Overall, "Toronto 2014" is a reflective piece on life, reality, and the passage of time. The song touches on happiness, nostalgia, insecurity, and hopefulness. It's a reminder that life is not always what it seems, and we need to find clarity and appreciate the time we have.

I was I in my 2nd grade of senior high school. Everything was simple and innocent.
Play games and Basketball with friends. rode a bike to wherever we want. The world was in our hands.
That was a good time. No fears, anxiety. Relationship was simple too.I really miss that time.
