Supermarket Flowers
Ed Sheeran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I took the supermarket flowers from the windowsill
I threw the day-old tea from the cup
Packed up the photo album Matthew had made
Memories of a life that's been loved
Took the get well soon cards and stuffed animals
Poured the old ginger beer down the sink
Dad always told me, "Don't you cry when you're down"
But mum, there's a tear every time that I blink

Oh, I'm in pieces, it's tearin' me up, but I know
A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved

So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holdin' me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back
He'll say, "Hallelujah, you're home"

I fluffed the pillows, made the beds, stacked the chairs up
Folded your nightgowns neatly in a case
John says he'd drive then put his hand on my cheek
And wiped a tear from the side of my face

And I hope that I see the world as you did 'cause I know
A life with love is a life that's been lived

So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holdin' me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back
He'll say, "Hallelujah, you're home"

Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
You got to see the person I have become
Spread your wings and I know

That when God took you back
He said, "Hallelujah, you're home"

Overall Meaning

The song "Supermarket Flowers" by Ed Sheeran beautifully describes the aftermath of the death of his mother. In the first verse, Sheeran describes packing up his mother's belongings after her passing. He takes the supermarket flowers and gets rid of the old tea and ginger beer. He packs away a photo album and some stuffed animals, memories of his mother's life. He remembers his father telling him not to cry when he's down, but still sheds tears when he remembers his mother.

In the chorus, Sheeran sings "a heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved," which is a poignant reflection on his mother's life and the love she gave him. Sheeran tells his mother, through the song, that she was an angel in the shape of his mum. He remembers how she would always be there to hold him up when he fell down. Sheeran hopes to see the world as his mother did because he knows that a life with love is a life that's been lived.

In the second verse, Sheeran describes cleaning up his mother's house and preparing for her departure. He fluffs the pillows, makes the beds, and folds her nightgowns neatly in a case. His friend John helps him, wiping a tear from Sheeran's face. Sheeran hopes to honor his mother by seeing the world as she did, to live a life full of love like she did.

Overall, "Supermarket Flowers" beautifully captures the grief and love that comes with the loss of a loved one. It's a touching tribute to Sheeran's mother, and a reminder to cherish the love that surrounds us.

Hallelujah to:

- Those who are romantically devastated, heartbroken, you can always heal.
- Those who lost someone in their lives, may they rest in peace.
- Those facing stress right now, you can do it.
- Those that thinking suicide is a solution, It's not.
- Those souls of our beloved, may they have eternal life. (Amen)
- Those having a sad day, tomorrow won't be the same if you do something.
- To everyone, have a nice day!

My dad passed 6/30 2:52PM. Heard this song for the first time a few days ago.

These words :

"Oh I'm in pieces, it's tearing me up, but I know
A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved
So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum(dad)
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home"

Thank you Ed

My mom died in a car accident when I was 3 years old. I was in the same car when the accident happened.
My aunt told me that they found me below the legs of my mom as if she tried to protect me in the last moment.

My aunt took care of me since then and adopted me. Now when I refer to "mom" I think of my aunt. I am grateful to be blessed with two moms in a life time.

Thank you for the song, Ed. I really appreciate it.

@meshaylagrace6741

Wow, I guess since you were 3 you weren't very sure of what was happening but just know that parents are the most important thing in life and they are the ones that raised you and tought you your ways of life, My mom had surgery and almost died I was so careful with her at the time and I had no idea what to do I was so scared of loosing my mom that I just stayed in my room and cried. Now a year later I listen to this song by my favorite artist and I cry every time, Thanks for this song Ed it makes me feel much more appreciated to have a mom and father that love me very much
Hallelujah!
