Coat of Armour
George Ezra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is it time that you move on
Collect your bags from the doorstep
I'll take them on, I'll take the noise

Is there no way back, 'cause your back gone
Is it not clear where it all went wrong
I can't purify, can't make it right
Is she letting you down again?
Is she letting you down?

We'll drive slower, 'round the corner
Hoping all this will change
I'm your brother, your coat of armour
Hoping all this will change

You worked it down, all long ago
Lay your arms on the doorstep
I feel the tension, I feel the worst

Is she letting you down again?
Is she letting you down?
Is she letting you down again?
Is she letting you down?

We'll drive slower, 'round the corner
Hoping all this will change
I'm your brother, your coat of armour
Hoping all this will change

Is she letting you down again?
Is she letting you down?
Is she letting you down again?
Is she letting you down?

We'll drive slower, 'round the corner
Hoping all this will change
I'm your brother, your coat of armour
Hoping all this will change
We'll drive slower, 'round the corner
Hoping all this will change
I'm your brother, your coat of armour
Hoping all this will change

I'm your brother, your coat of armour

Overall Meaning

The song "Coat of Armour" by George Ezra is a sentimental, heartfelt message about being there for someone in their time of need. The lyrics depict a situation where a friend or family member is going through a tough time in their relationship and needs support. The singer is offering to help by taking on the burden and noise of their friend's baggage, but is unable to purify or make it right. The chorus repeats the question of whether the person is being let down by their significant other.

The metaphorical "coat of armour" refers to the singer being a source of protection and strength for their friend during this difficult time. The repetition of the phrase "we'll drive slower, 'round the corner" shows that the singer is in it for the long haul, willing to take the journey with their friend and hoping that things will eventually change for the better. The overall tone of the song is one of love, loyalty, and compassion, with the singer providing a comforting presence for someone they care for deeply.

He's def one of the best things that has happened to music in the last decade! This man is class personified------ his deep yet textured honey bee voice, his lyrics, the composition, the music arrangement---- everything blends in magically. His songs are like warm blankets on a freezing cold winter night.

Debapriyo Ghosh , writing descriptions like that, you should be writing songs yourself! Such a lovely description.
