Harmless Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I packed my bags and ran right outside
You'd believe, if I'd leave
Some part of me with you that's alive
I've seen you-
I've been yours
I've been
Trying to explain why it's a lovely morning
Why I'd be withholding
If I said I didn't try
You're alone, all the time
You packed your mind and you left me behind
I've seen you
I've been yours
I've been
Trying to explain
Why it's a lonely morning
Trying to explain
Why I've been withholding
Trying to explain
Why I don't know where I'm going
The lyrics to Harmless's song Bridges describe the feelings of a person who has left their loved one and is struggling to come to terms with the reasons why. The first stanza talks about the person leaving for some time, indicating that the departure was initially seen as temporary. However, as the person packs their bags and runs outside, it becomes evident that the separation may be more permanent. The lyrics suggest that there's a part of the person who is still with their loved one.
The second stanza highlights the struggles of the person left behind. The person being left behind feels alone all the time and has "packed their mind" and left the other person behind. The use of the word "mind" suggests that the person left behind may be overthinking or analyzing things more than necessary. The lyrics go on to state that the first person has seen the second person, and they have been theirs, meaning that they have had a connection or relationship together.
The chorus repeats, emphasizing the first person's difficulties in explaining the reasons behind leaving and their indecision about where to go. The overall message of the song appears to be about the complexities of relationships and how little control we often have over how we feel or what we do.
