The Decemberists Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And under the boughs unbowed
All clothed in a snowy shroud
She had no heart, so hardened
All under the boughs unbowed

Each feather it fell from skin
'Til threadbare, as she grew thin
How were my eyes so blinded?
Each feather it fell from skin

And I will hang my head, hang my head low
And I will hang my head, hang my head low

A gray sky, a bitter sting
A rain cloud, a crane on wing
All out beyond horizon
A gray sky, a bitter sting

And I will hang my head, hang my head low
And I will hang my head, hang my head low
And I will hang my head, hang my head low
And I will hang my head, hang my head low

And I will hang my head, hang my head low
And I will hang my head, hang my head low, low, low

Overall Meaning

The Crane Wife 3 is a haunting and emotional song by the band The Decemberists. It tells the story of a woman who had no heart and was all alone, shrouded in a snowy white garment. The language used in the song is poetic and evocative, and it creates a sense of unease in the listener. The woman's feathers fall from her skin, and she grows thin until she is threadbare. The singer questions how his eyes were so blinded, suggesting that perhaps he was complicit in the woman's suffering, or that he only saw her true self once it was too late.

The song is called The Crane Wife 3 because it is part of a three-song cycle based on the Japanese folk tale of the same name. According to the story, a man marries a crane who is able to transform into a human woman. However, she leaves him when he discovers her true identity. The Decemberists use the story to explore themes of love, loss, and betrayal. The Crane Wife 3 is a particularly poignant part of the cycle because it focuses on the woman's loneliness and isolation.

I screamed when I saw that the Decemberists were in Parks and Rec. One of the best moments of my life. Right along with the time I thought a really tiny mouse was a very hairy spider.

I know this is somewhat of a sad song, but to me it's also a reminder to trust, and not ignore what's right in front of you.

My last name is Crane, and I always wanted this to play at my wedding.

Tomorrow, I propose to my girlfriend of four years. Let's hope all goes well, and this plays at our wedding :)

Just bought this album at a record store for 99 cents.

Crazy they are selling greatness for so cheap.
